Monday Kudos: D.C. United Women Win W-League Eastern Conference Championship

We hear what you're saying: "D.C. United has a women's team?"

Well, not really. The team is licensed by D.C. United, but is independently owned and operated, playing its home games at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Germantown. They compete in the Pro-Am W-League of the United Soccer Leagues, the top women's league in the country now that the WPS has fallen by the wayside.

According to the team's website, the women on the team are "amateurs, collegiate stars, and unpaid professionals." Forgive us for pulling out this cliche, but there's not much more than pride and love of the game involved here. Also, Cindi Harkes (that's John's wife, if you're wondering) serves as an assistant coach.

Over the weekend, D.C. United Women hosted, and won, the W-League's Eastern Conference championship, defeating the Virginia Beach Piranhas in Saturday's semifinal and the Charlotte Lady Eagles in Sunday's final. Both wins came by 3-0 scorelines. If you weren't up in Germantown for it, you can check out the highlights here.

United Women (current record: 13-0-1) will travel to Ottawa this coming weekend for the W-League Championship. Information on where to find the games is here. We wish them the best, though even if they don't win the whole thing, they've already won quite a bit.
