2012 London Olympics Local Heroes: Track And Field Opens Friday

The seventh official day of the 2012 London Olympics brings on the first day of the track and field competition. And as you might expect, there are lots of local athletes who will hit the floor of the Olympic Stadium in Stratford.

Hampton's Francena McCorory will run in the first round of the women's 400m race Friday (7:00 a.m.) Annapolis-born Matt Centrowitz will race in the first round of the men's 1500m race (3:05 p.m.), while Phobay Kutu-Akoi, who went to high school in Silver Spring and ran track at St. John's University on New York, will represent Liberia in the women's 100m race (Preliminaries at 5:40 a.m., First round at 2:05 p.m.)

In the pool, Katie Ledecky will swim in the women's 800m freestyle race Friday night (2:45 p.m.). Columbia, Maryland-born Andrew Gemmell will also swim preliminaries in his only event of the Games, the 1500m. (5:24 a.m.). And, of course, there's that man Michael Phelps, who swam the fastest semifinal in the 100m butterfly and will go for medal No. 21 and gold No. 17 Friday (2:38 p.m.). Phelps is also expected to race in the 4x100m medley relay, which will run its heats at 6:49 a.m. Friday morning.

Finally, staying on the water, D.C.-born Sarah Trowbridge will row for gold in the women's double scull race at Eton Dorney (5:30 a.m.).
