Lucas Giolito Injury: Nationals Prospect Re-Injures Elbow, According To Report

Nationals pitching prospect Lucas Giolito will have his elbow re-examined by orthopedic specialist Dr. Lewis Yocum. Giolito was selected with the No. 16 overall pick in the 2012 MLB Draft.

Lucas Giolito has re-injured his elbow, ESPN.com reports. The Washington Nationals right-handed pitching prospect will be examined by orthopedic specialist Dr. Lewis Yocum to determine the extent of the injury, according to a team spokesperson.

Giolito was selected with the No. 16 overall pick in the 2012 MLB Draft out of high school from Los Angeles. The 18-year-old rookie turned down a scholarship offer from UCLA to begin his baseball career. Unfortunately, he hit a snag on Aug. 14 while pitching for the Nats' Gulf Coast League affiliate. He was pulled from the outing in the second inning when his velocity suddenly dropped of significantly.

Giolito suffered a thickness tear in one of his elbow ligaments this past spring. The injury did not require surgery, but Giolito did not pitch another game for high school team after the first week of March.
