U.S. Open Tennis Scores: Andy Roddick, Venus Williams Advance

Tuesday was a good day for the big-name American tennis players at the 2012 U.S. Open.

On the men's side, No. 20 Andy Roddick topped fellow American Rhyne Williams in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4. Roddick didn't give up a break all match, fighting off the two break points he faced with a strong serve, notching 20 aces and winning 90 percent of his first-serve points.

Sam Querrey had to work a little bit harder, but the 27th-seeded American also advanced on Tuesday after defeating Taiwan's Yen-Hsun Lu in four sets, 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 6-4, 7-5. Querrey will face Spain's Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo in the second round.

There have yet to be any upsets on the men's side. No. 5 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, No. 6 Tomas Berdych, No. 11 Nicolas Almagro and No. 15 Milos Raonic all advanced on Tuesday.

On the women's side of the draw, Venus Williams looked a bit like her old self, dispatching fellow American Bethanie Mattek-Sands in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. It was just one year ago that Williams had to withdraw from the U.S. Open due to Sjogren's syndrome. Williams will face No. 6 Angelique Kerber in the second round.

No. 10 Sara Errani, No. 13 Dominika Cibulkova and No. 20 Roberta Vinci were among the other women to advance on Tuesday.
