With the second day of action at the U.S. Open winding down with Tuesday's night session, a few names are making noise in Flushing Meadow, N.Y.
Russian Maria Kirilenko, the No. 14-seed in the women's singles tournament who might be better known as Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin's girlfriend, is on her way to the second round of the tournament after a dominating South African Chanelle Scheepers in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1.
Kirilenko will see Hungarian Greta Arn next in the second round, after Arn advanced as a result of her opponent, Agnes Szavay, retiring midway through the second set of their opening round match.
Arn and Kirilenko share their quarter of the U.S. Open with both No. 4 Serena Williams and No. 8 Carolina Wozniacki, and if the winner of their meeting moves on, they would see Williams in the round of 16.
