The Washington Redskins lead the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 6-0, in what has been a decidedly sloppy affair so far through one quarter -- mostly for the Bucs.
The Redskins decided to sit nearly the entire starting defense in the final preseason game, but the backups have been impressive so far, holding the Buccaneers to -3 total yards and zero first downs. The Bucs had plenty of time, however, holding the ball for over 10 minutes in the first quarter.
Bucs quarterback Brett Ratliff is just 1-for-2 for 5 yards, although it's the running game that has struggled the most against the Redskins defense with Michael Smith and Mossis Madu combining for five carries for three yards. The Redskins have two sacks and three tackles-for-loss already in the game.
The Redskins are taking advantage of short fields, with newly-signed kicker Billy Cundiff connecting on a 39-yard field goal to open the scoring, capping off a 30-yard opening drive for the Skins. Cundiff then nailed a 27-yard field goal after a seven-play, 14-yard drive for the Redskins following a long pun return by Brandon Banks.
Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins is 5-for-11 for 44 yards so far in the game.
