Twenty-one year-old Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia entered the finals of the Citi Open in Washington D.C. as the favorite. She was the top-seed. She was expected to win. Instead, however, Pavlyuchenkova was routed by Slovakia's Magdalena Rybarikova, who rolled to an easy 6-1, 6-1 victory Saturday night to capture the $220,000 title.
It marked Rybarikova's third-career championship after wins in Memphis last year and in Birmingham in 2009. The Slovakia native coasted comfortably against Pavlyuchenkova as a result of a strong start, capturing 20 of her first 21 service points (95 percent) in a match that lasted a mere total of 65 minutes.
In her first final of the year, Pavlyuchenkova was searching for her fourth WTA singles singles championship.
The men's final will be held Sunday between Germany's Tommy Haas and Ukraine's Alexandr Dolgopolov. Both won their semifinal matches Saturday in two sets.
