The jostling back-and-forth between China and Team USA continued in the medal count on Monday, as the final week of competition continued. USA cut China's lead to just one medal in the overall count, and two in the gold medal count. The American highlights included a gold medal win for Jen Suhr in the pole vault. The USA track and field team had a disappointing showing in the men's 400m hurdles, however, adding a silver medal thanks to Michael Tinsley.
While the USA and China will continue to battle for the top spot, the Russians moved past the host nation for third with a strong Monday. Here's a more complete look at the medal count:
- China, 64 (31 gold, 19 silver, 14 bronze)
- United States, 63 (29, 15, 19)
- Russia, 42 (7, 17, 18)
- Great Britain, 40 (18, 11, 11)
- Japan, 28 (2, 12, 14)
