2012 London Olympics: Gabby Douglas Falls Off Balance Beam In Final

Gabby Douglas of Virginia Beach, VA made history when she became the first American gymnast to ever win gold medals in both team and individual all-around competitions in any single Olympics. She didn't follow up that success very well on the uneven bars on Monday, though, when she finished last in the individual event competition.

She followed up that with a similar result on Tuesday when she fell off the balance beam to earn a 7th place finish out of the eight competitors in the event. The fall is the conclusion of Douglas's competition in the 2012 London Olympics as the sole event left is the floor exercise which Douglas will not participate in.

Also participating for the United States in the balance beam competition was Aly Raisman who finished with the bronze after earning a tiebreak victory over Catalina Ponor of Romania. After a tie for third, Raisman's execution score was higher than Ponor's, giving the American captain the third spot.

Chinese gymnasts Linlin Deng and Lu Sui took the gold and silver medals to add to their world-leading medal total, but Raisman's bronze keeps USA just one medal behind.
