Team USA built a 10-medal lead over China on Thursday with a productive day on the track and a golden day in women's team sports. Usain Bolt and David Rudisha stole all the headlines during day seven of track and field, but Team USA sealed up two separate gold-silver finishes. Ashton Eaton and Trey Hardee went 1-2 in the decathlon while Florida Gators' teammates Christian Taylor and Will Claye went gold-silver in the triple jump.
Off the track, it was the women's soccer team pulling out a thrilling 2-1 win over Japan to win yet another gold medal in a sport they have typically dominated at the Olympics. The women's water polo team also added to Thursday's gold rush. Here's the tope five in the medal count:
- United States, 90 (39 gold, 25 silver, 26 bronze)
- China, 80 (37, 24, 19)
- Russia, 56 (12, 21, 23)
- Great Britain, 52 (25, 13, 14)
- Germany, 37 (10, 16, 11)
