The Virginia Cavaliers (2-0) survived a scare from the visiting Penn State Nittany Lions (0-2) on Saturday, escaping with a 17-16 win only after Penn State kicker Sam Ficken missed his fourth field goal of the day. The Nittany Lions forced four turnovers in Virginia territory but were unable to capitalize.
Penn State and new head coach Bill O'Brien looked like they might steal a victory in Charlottesville, before a late Virginia 12 play, 86 yard drive culminated in a Michael Rocco to Jake McGee touchdown pass with just 1:28 left in the game. Rocco finished 21 of 33 on the day, for 238 yards and two touchdowns, with one interception. McGee caught four balls for 99 yards and the touchdown.
Penn State managed to set Ficken up for a 42-yard field goal as time expired, but the sophomore missed his fourth kick of the afternoon.
