After a two and a half hour rain delay in the bottom of the ninth inning with Washington trailing 6-5, Nationals outfielder Jayson Werth decided the game must go on, homering off of Miami's Heath Bell to send the game to extra innings, with Washington ultimately winning 7-6 in the bottom of the 10th inning on a Corey Brown single.
A night after Stephen Strasburg struggled against the Marlins, leading to his early shutdown, lefty Ross Detwiler had a subpar outing on the mound for Washington. Detwiler allowed five runs, three earned, and seven hits in five innings of work, including two home runs in the first inning.
Ryan Zimmerman, Ian Desmond and Adam LaRoche all collected two hits for Washington, with Zimmerman hitting his 20th home run in the eighth inning.
Mark Buehrle pitched seven strong innings for Ozzie Guillen's club, allowing five hits and three runs. Giancarlo Stanton and Gaby Hernandez each homered for the Fish, who were once again sabotaged by their bullpen.
