Navy vs. Norfolk State recap: Midshipmen fall, 74-68

After amassing a huge first-half lead, the Spartans fended off a late Navy charge in this non-conference game.

With a 22-point halftime deficit, Navy was going to need a miracle topple Norfolk State. And while Navy put up a fight, the Midshipmen comeback fell short, losing 74-68. Pendarvis Williams had 21 points on 7-of-10 shooting for Norfolk State. Fourteen of those points came in the first half, as the junior hit four three-pointers.

Navy got within single digits with less than a minute left remaining in the second half, but never had a realistic chance of winning the game. Despite scoring 46 second-half points, the Midshipmen had 10 of their shots blocked by Spartan defenders. Forwards Rob Johnson and Brandon Goode each had three blocks for Norfolk State, who had none of their shots blocked by Navy.

Kevin Alter led the failed comeback for Navy, hitting six three-pointers on his way to 18 points in just 10 minutes off the bench. Navy failed to get to the line, hitting just four free throws on six attempts while Norfolk State racked up 17 makes in 26 tries.

Navy is now 6-10 on the season, and has won just one away game thus far. The Midshipmen travel to Easton, Pa., to face Lafayette of the CAA on Jan. 12.
