Charlie Davies To Provide D.C. United With A Forward That Actually Puts Shots On Goal

Near the end of Charlie Davies' introductory press conference at RFK Stadium today, coach Ben Olsen gave lip service to his existing players by saying that the team has "four forwards" that can start for them. He said he feels "confident" in the group he has, and that Davies will have to work for his job just like all the others.

It's classic coach-speak, and it may be true that Davies won't be physically ready to start right away. But Olsen is really being very nice to his existing forwards, who couldn't come anywhere close to actually shooting the ball on goal. This stat, for our own Martin Shatzer, puts that into perspective.

Okay, so that's a slight exaggeration, but the point still stands. When it comes to something as fundamental as actually giving himself a chance to put the ball in the back of the net, there's Davies (even at 75-percent health), and there's every other forward on the team.
