Georgetown Hoyas women's basketball coach Terri Williams-Flournoy is leaving for Auburn University. According to the Washington Post, Williams-Flournoy will take the women's basketball head coaching job for the Tigers starting in 2012.
Williams-Flournoy coached the Hoyas for eight seasons. Under her leadership, the Georgetown women's basketball program was a regular on the national top-25 list each season. She led the team to the NCAA tournament in each of the last three years, including a Sweet 16 appearance in 2011. They lost in the second round of the NCAA tournament this year. She leaves Georgetown with a 143-104 record.
The former head coach thanked the university for the opportunity in an interview with the Post.
"I'm very grateful to Georgetown," Williams-Flournoy said on Tuesday afternoon when reached by telephone. "I think we did accomplish a lot. If you look at the first three years when I started and even in that fourth year, it took a lot to get the program turned around. It's almost like watching your child grow."
Georgetown will begin the search for Williams-Flournoy's replacement immediately.
