The BB&T Classic is underway in D.C., but you might not be able to tell from the mostly empty Verizon Center.
In the first game of today's triple-header, American University got off to a good start against the heavily-favored Florida Gators. The Eagles kept it close throughout the first half, but the Gators began to pull away before the half ended.
Chandler Parsons of the Gators went 4-5 shooting in the half, finishing with a game-leading 10 points. Parsons also collected four rebounds.
American's leading scorer was Vlad Moldoveanu, who had seven points, but was just 3-10 shooting in the half. The Eagles will need to choose their shots better if they are going to stand a chance of beating the No. 16 team in the nation. They shot just 38.1% from the field in the first 20 minutes of action at Verizon Center. The Eagles were also out-rebounded 12-8 by the bigger team from Florida.
