The first day of the Puerto Rico Tip Off is in the books and there were some surprising results from the first day of action. Lets take a look at how the bracket stands now, and what the four matchups you will see today look like.
The Maryland Terrapins simply could not get their offense in rhythm, and the Alabama Crimson Tide scored just enough for a comfortable 62-42 win. The Tide were led by Tony Mitchell who started fast and scored a game high 17 points.
The big upset of the day probably belonged to Wichita State who beat Colorado 67-58. They outscored the Buffaloes 33-26 in the first half and never looked back. The Shockers advance to play Alabama in the semifinals this afternoon while the Terps wil play Colorado in the consolation bracket.
As expected, Temple handled Western Michigan pretty handily, earning a comfortably 69-55 victory. Temple was paced by a balance attack, with all five of their starters scoring in double figures.
The final game featured Purdue and Iona, and it was a lot closer than a lot of Boilermakers might have predicted. A Robbie Hummel three pointer put Purdue up by one with 20 seconds left, and they held on for a 91-90 victory. They'll face Temple today while Iona will face Western Michigan.
