COLLEGE PARK, MD: The Maryland Terrapins just laid another egg against the Virginia Cavaliers, losing 31-13 on Senior Day. It was the Terps' seventh loss of the year in eight games against other FBS opponents. They have officially been eliminated from bowl eligibility. Other than that though, everything is going great.
Here is reaction from coach Randy Edsall and some of the players in the press conference after the game.
Randy Edsall:
On the game: "Just disappointed that we had it at 14-13 there at halftime and we weren't able to generate enough int he second half to put ourselves in the victory column. Five turnovers and 3-14 on third down, and again, giving up some of the big plays didn't enable us to do what we wanted to do today and that was get a victory. I feel bad for the seniors, not being able to go out with a win. I thought the crowd was good, I thought we had a really good crowd, and it's just disappointing that we just didn't come away with a win."
On being eliminated from bowl eligibility: "We're not going to slog through anything. We're going to go out there and play hard and work to get better. What we're going to do is be even more determined to try and get better. One of those goals is gone for this year, but now it's up to us to go out and get better and that's exactly what we're going to do. It is disappointing, but again, we just have to go and get better."
On what is left to play for: "I think you probably all saw it today, I don't think anybody checked out today. I think that just in terms of what we've been talking about and what we've been telling these young men and who these young men are they know that we've got Notre Dame next week and we're going to play as hard as we can. We've got another game after that and we're going to play as hard as we can. As long as we've got games to play the object is to go out every week and get better."
C.J. Brown:
On receivers dropping the ball: "There's nothing you can do except put the ball in the hands. Drops are gonna happen, you just have to shake it off and move on to the next play."
On what is left to play for: "We just have to keep getting better. We have another hard game coming up this week against Notre Dame, and if that's not going to get you excited, playing on National television right down at FedEx [Field], I don't know what will."
On the difficulties of the two quarterback system: "We've been doing it for a while now, last couple weeks, so we're starting to get used to it. But definitely during the game, just staying warm not knowing when you're gonna go in, it's tough. but you just have to adapt and move on."
Danny O'Brien:
On what is left to play for: "Pride. I mean my Dad went to Notre Dame so I want to beat them pretty bad. Then playing two North Carolina schools, don't want to lose to them, haven't lost to them yet. So me personally I have a lot to play for. But us as a team, it's just about pride. Losing never gets easier and coming back into the locker room and hearing the losing speech is just terrible. And that doesn't get better. We're all competitors and we don't want to lose."
On the message Coach Edsall has been delivering following losses: "He's said that we're not panicking and we're going to get better and to keep fighting, and I think that's good. You don't want a coach who's message is changing with each loss."
On whether the struggles are scheme or execution related: "Probably a little bit of both, probably a lot more lack of execution. There are plays to be made. Second play of the game, the sun gets in Quintin's eyes, that's a touchdown. There's nothing with the scheme or anything like that. Bad reads, drops, missed routes, missed protection. The last drive we messed up in protection a few times. So it's just the little things. But it's probably a lot more execution because when you go back and watch the tape there's going to be plays that were left on the field."
