As I'm sure you saw yesterday, Debbie Yow called Gary Williams out for sabotaging the hiring process at a press conference to introduce Mark Gottfried as N.C. State's latest coach. Gary immediately made a statement denying those accusations. I was sort of hoping that would be the end of it. Turns out, it won't be.
As soon as Yow said that there would soon be a National column on the event, I think we all knew it would be coming from Gregg Doyel of CBSSports.com. He is notoriously pro-Yow and anti-Gary; and I think it's safe to assume that his new article will come exactly as advertised.
Dan Steinberg at the Washington Post's D.C. Sports Bog has a transcription of a recent radio appearance Doyel made, and it makes me wonder how any legitmate journalistic organization would give this guy a job, and then assign him to write something about which he already has such a strong opinion.
"Are we done talking about Gary Williams?" he later asked. "I want to make this very clear, that if Gary Williams does not return my call, he’s scared of me. And so he can act all big and bad, and he can stand there on his coaching bench and turn around and yell at his assistant coaches, who've done nothing wrong. And when a guy on the court travels, he can turn around and yell at the 12th man on his bench, because he’s a little bit tiny coward runt of a man. He can do all that.
That's just one paragraph of what must have been a five minute rant against Gary Williams. Seriously, how do you keep your job after calling the subject of one of your articles a "little bit tiny coward runt of a man?" I wonder why he isn't calling you back, Gregg. an you blame him for not wanting to take part in his own slander?
