Gary Williams has two personalities. There's the fiery coach who can't seem to control himself on the sideline, and apparently the fantastic human being that everyone who knows him off the court. Jay Bilas wrote an article on ESPN clamoring for Gary Williams to enter the Hall of Fame, and one story he told stood out.
↵↵↵I went to the Middle East with Williams to coach U.S. Army teams in a tournament called Operation Hardwood. Williams coached a group of soldiers from Wisconsin, and in a short week of coaching these soldiers, he won supporters for life. In talking with the soldiers on Williams' team one day, I could tell they revered him. One went so far as to say, "I'd take a bullet for him." It was a remarkable statement from that Wisconsin soldier, and it was a remarkable statement about Gary Williams.

It takes a lot of character and integrity to run a program the way that Gary has over the past two decades or so. You might question his performance, but you can't question the type of person that Gary is. He will be sorely missed.
