It remains to be seen whether the players that Miami declared ineligible due to their connection with booster Nevad Shapiro end up playing in the season opener against Maryland, but as of now, it looks like they may not. Miami coach Al Golden told reporters on Tuesday that he is planning for the game as if they will not be playing. Via Tim Reynolds:
Golden on the ineligible players: "Right now, we're not counting on those guys."
Eight players, including quarterback Jacory Harris, were reportedly ruled ineligible by Miami in an attempt to get the NCAA to overturn the decision prior to the season opener. Golden, however, said that number was inaccurate.
Regardless, this is a sign that the Terps will indeed be facing a depleted Miami squad on Monday. Both Golden and Maryland coach Randy Edsall will be making their ACC debuts in the Labor Day night showdown, which will be televised on ESPN.
