The Maryland Terrapins will open their 2012-13 season against the Kentucky Wildcats on Friday night at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Both teams will look different than they did last season.
Maryland is excited about a solid recruiting class, including Shaquille Cleare and Jake Layman. In addition, the NCAA ruled transfer Dez Wells eligible to play immediately for the Terps, which drastically improved their outlook for this season. Before this news, most journalists thought the Terps had an outside shot at qualifying for the NCAA tournament. Now, that is the expectation. Maryland is coming off a 17-15 season.
For Kentucky, Friday's game will answer many questions about a very young team. Coach John Calipari has lost all five starters from last season's national championship team, and has six new players. While he and Wildcats fans are excited about the upcoming season, the team remains largely a mystery.
