Two or so weeks ago, the Nationals placed Luis Atilano on the disabled list with elbow "tenderness." Now, he won't return this season, according to Bill Ladson:

It's official: #Nats RHP Luis Atilano is out for the season. He had bone chips taken out of his elbow Thursday.

Atilano will end the season with a 6-7 record and a 5.15 ERA in 16 starts.

On Wednesday, we learned that Luis Atilano would miss his next start because of a tender elbow. Now, it appears that elbow is serious enough to keep Atilano out for a little longer than that. William Ladson is now reporting that the tenderness in his elbow will land Atilano on the DL.

Luis Atilano will be going on the disabled list because of a sore right elbow. He said the elbow has been hurting for several weeks.

While Atilano being moved to the DL is the headline, the most interesting part of that report might be that the elbow has been bothering him for “several” weeks. If that is indeed the case, then there is no reason that the club should have waited this long to put Atilano on the DL.

It also may explain why he has been struggling so much after his hot start. Given time to rest, hopefully Atilano regains some of his early form upon his return to the club.

Well, that didn't last very long. The Nationals just recalled Luis Atilano on Tuesday, but after his lackluster start, the news comes down that he will miss his next scheduled start on Sunday, via Bill Ladson.

I just learned that #Nats RHP Luis Atilano will not pitch Sunday against the Brewers. No reason was given for the decision.

Ladson very quickly followed up with the reason he was missing in his first tweet.

RHP Luis Atilano is complaining of a tender elbow.

Altilano gave up five runs in just four innings last night before he was forced out of the game by a rain delay (at least that's what it seemed). With today's news, it seems logical that his elbow was bothering him last night, and the rain was just convenient timing. No word yet on how long the elbow will keep Altilano out of the rotation or if the Nats plan on sending him to the DL.

Stop me Nationals fans if you've heard this before: the team will send down outfielder Justin Maxwell to AAA-Syracuse, this time to make room for pitcher Luis Atilano, according to Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post.

It's the fourth time Maxwell has been sent down this season, and while it was a necessary move to get Atilano back in the Nationals' rotation, that's no consolation for Maxwell. Maxwell expressed his frustration with the situation prior to last night's Nationals game.

"The game's not frustrating," Maxwell said. "The process can be. Like I said before, I'm not worried about all that other crap. I just want to play."

[...]

"I asked them, 'Is this how it's going to be?' " Maxwell said. "They just said, 'You're the guy with options.' I said, 'Okay.' That makes sense. They want me to play every day and I want to play every day. Considering I'm the only guy with options on the team and I'm not a left-handed batter, I'm the odd man out. But I know God has a plan for me and it's all going to work itself out."

Such is life when you're on the fringes of the Major Leagues.

Meanwhile, Atilano, who will start Tuesday night's game, was 6-6 with a 4.85 ERA this season before being briefly sent down to AAA.
