Andrew Gordon wasn't immediately assigned to play in Hershey, rather sent through waivers where he would be made available to join another team. According to Corey Masisak, Gordon has cleared that process without being claimed by another team, and will report to Hershey and join the Bears.

Never a bad thing to keep a relatively young and talented guy in the organization, especially for a Hershey team that has a Calder Cup to defend.

The Capitals start the season on Friday, and by that time they need to have a completed and finialized rosters. If tehre are any players who have survived all the cuts so far, won't be skating with the big boys to kick off the regular season, will be cut this week.

On Tuesday, The Capitals made their most recent moves, from Mike Vogel.

#Caps have reassigned forwards Jay Beagle, Andrew Gordon and Mathieu Perreault to AHL Hershey. Gordon must clear waivers first.

It's a little surprising that Gordon and Perreault didn't make the final roster. They are both young players with potential that were expected to compete for the main roster. Particularly Perreault, who plays a position of need for the club, is only 22-years-old, and had nine points in only 21 games played last year. That's why the last cuts are always the hardest.

All three players will join the Hershey Bears, where they will continue to have an opportunity to impress the organization.

The Capitals continue to narrow their roster down as the season approaches. Their latest move, according to Katie Carrera, is comprised of three more reassignments.

The Capitals have sent Cody Eakin back to his junior team, the WHL's Swift Current Broncos while Braden Holtby and Lawrence Nycholat have been assigned to Hershey.

Not everybody that has been skating with the Capitals during training camp this week will be on their roster when the team officially opens the season next month. Some will be with the Hershey Bears, while others will be back with their junior teams. The team has sent out a press release with the newest camp roster on it, that also reflects the cuts they have already made.

Patrick Cullity, David de Kastrozza, Joe Finley, Todd Ford, Anton Gustafsson, Jake Hauswirth, Nikita Kashirsky, Dmitry Kugryshev and Ashton Rome have all been assigned to the Hershey Bears.

While another five players - Samuel Carrier, Brett Flemming, Stanlislav Galiev, Philipp Grubauer, Garrett Mitchell - will be returning to their junior teams.

The roster now stands at 47, which is still far to big for the regular seasons. There are many more cuts, or reassignments if you want to be gentler about it, expected to be announced in the coming weeks. We'll have all the latest as it breaks.

The Capitals will be back on the ice tonight, as they start their slate of preseason games against the Collumbus Blue Jackets. You can find their full lineups here (.pdf), via Japer's Rink.

Notables: You might notice the absence of a certain right winger. Alex Ovechkin is not on the roster for this game, presumably getting an early night off so that he may ease himself back into game shape.

Preseason is a great time to let the younger players get some serious playing time and experience. This could be a good opportunity for Karl Alzner, John Carlson, and Marcus Johansson to show the coaching staff what they can add to the team in an actual game situation. For Alzner and Carlson it will be the chance to show the staff how much they improved, but for Johansson it will be the first chance to shine.

We'll also be keeping an eye on Alexander Semin. This game isn't that important, so my guess is that he'll have at least four goals. ZING!

After a relatively uneventful offseason, the Washington Capitals opened training camp on Saturday at the Kettler Capitals Iceplex in Arlington.

The Capitals return with basically the same team that romped through the regular season, only to fall disappointingly short in the playoffs. This training camp is the first step in putting last season's finish behind them. We'll provide updates from training camp, as well as live coverage whenever possible, in this StoryStream.
