When it was first reported that Chris Cooley suffered a concussion, it didn't look like he'd be able to play right away. However, it turns out Cooley's concussion was minor, and after taking part in practice today, it looks like he will indeed play against the Chicago Bears on Sunday.

Cooley also reportedly said that he's fine and he wouldn't do anything differently in his approach going forward. Obviously, there's some concern anytime a teammate says you played through a concussion, which is what Fred Davis did earlier this week. However, Cooley cleared the air about that Monday in his radio segment on 106.7 The Fan, and seems to be okay now.

The Redskins will need Cooley as a checkdown option against a Bears defense featuring a strong pass rush, led by Julius Peppers.

Two days ago, Chris Cooley said he felt much better after suffering a concussion in the Redskins' game against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday. He said that if he was able to practice Thursday, he would play against the Chicago Bears this week.

Today, Mike Shanahan indicated that Cooley will indeed practice Thursday. Via CSN's Ryan O'Halloran.

This means that Cooley may play one week after suffering a concussion in a game. He said the injury was minor, but it still does make you wonder.

In his weekly appearance on "The LaVar Arrington Show With Chad Dukes" on 106.7 The Fan, Chris Cooley said the concussion he suffered in Sunday's loss to the Indianapolis Colts was "mild" and that he was "never out of it at all." He merely said that he was a little "slow," and eventually took himself out of the game in the third quarter.

"I was totally coherent," he said. "I was just a little slow."

Cooley said the concussion occurred sometime in the second quarter, and he tried to play through it. He said he passed the initial concussion tests, but that he just became too slow to continue.

"I remember everything. I know what was going on," he said. I knew what was going on at the time ... it kind of messed up my peripheral vision, and just kind of made me slow, and made me a grouch."

Cooley said he felt really bad last night and could not lie down, but feels much better today after taking a three-and-a-half hour nap.

This is Cooley's fourth concussion in his football-playing career, but he said this one was much less severe than the ones he suffered in college. He also said he hasn't suffered a concussion in eight years.

Cooley said he will undergo a CAT scan tomorrow, and will take a couple days off until the symptoms go away. If they do, he could practice Thursday, in which case, he would play next week against the Chicago Bears.

One of the biggest -- and if we're honest, scariest -- mysteries of the Washington Redskins' 27-24 loss to the Indianapolis Colts has to do with tight end Chris Cooley's condition. Cooley had to leave the game in the third quarter after suffering a concussion, but in light of all the head injuries suffered around the league yesterday, it was somewhat scary that one of Cooley's teammates said that Cooley tried to play through the injury.

Redskins coach Mike Shanahan was asked about that -- and Cooley in general -- right off the bat at his Monday press conference. Shanahan said he wasn't sure when Cooley suffered the injury, and when asked about the idea that Cooley tried to play through it, he had this to say, via TBD's Mike Jones.

"I think, throughout my career, most people try to do that," Shanahan said. "You'll have to speak with him, but Chris is a competitor, and he probably didn't think it was anything big, and tried to get back in there. We could see very quickly that something was wrong, and that's why he was out."

Perhaps we're being too sensitive, considering everything that happened yesterday, but something about that quote seems a bit disconcerting.

Concussions are a tricky injury to deal with because it can be a few days before its full extent can be known. At this point, just over 12 hours after suffering the concussion, Chris Cooley is still awaiting further testing.

The interesting part of that tweet is the last part. It seems to confirm what Fred Davis said earlier about Cooley playing a few series after he suffered the concussion. We don't have any official confirmation from Cooley or the team that this is the case, but at this point it seems like that is what happened.

Concussions and head injuries have been one of the most talked about issues surrounding the NFL in the past year or so. There are more precautions in place now than ever to ensure that players who have suffered head injuries fully recover before re-entering a game as a way to reduce the risk of long term affects.

That's why the comments Fred Davis made on the Comcast Sportsnet's post-game show regarding Chris Cooley's concussion are so surprising, transcribed by Dan Steinberg.

"He was running a route, and a guy just ran straight into him with a head shot," Davis said. "I think he continued to play for another few series, I think he even caught a couple balls by the goal line, but I think you could tell a little bit that he wasn't feeling well. When he came to the sideline you could just tell he was a little bit drowsy, couldn't see out of his left eye a little bit for a second. He's a warrior though. I think he'll be fine"

Yikes.

That is bad news for everyone involved. The risk Cooley took by checking back into a game after a concussion is obvious, and the Redskins could get in trouble with the league for not recognizing and dealing with the concussion in a timely manner.

A lot of the blame for this however has to rest with Cooley himself. If he couldn't see out of his left eye he has to know that there is something wrong and that he should alert the training staff. With those symptoms how much better could he have been over his replacement anyway? There was no reason for him to be out there once he started to feel the effects of the hit.

On a day where head shots and injuries dominated the headlines of the NFL this might be the most egregious offense. Sometimes in the heat of the game head shots are accidental and unavoidable but there was nothing stopping Cooley from checking himself out of the game once he started to feel the symptoms of a concussion. This won't be the last we hear of this ...

The Redskins lost a tough game to the Indianapolis Colts, but they suffered a far bigger loss at the end of the third quarter. Tight end Chris Cooley, who leads the team in receptions, was forced to leave the game with a concussion. Coach Mike Shanahan confirmed the diagnosis in his post-game press conference, saying "just looking at him, you could tell something was wrong."

It's not clear when Cooley suffered the injury. He was on the field for the final Redskins' drive in the third quarter, but did not return to the field. If Cooley is forced to miss significant time, Fred Davis would step in.

This is especially difficult for Cooley because he suffered three concussions in college, according to Rick Maese of the Washington Post.
