The College Football Bowls are very nearly among us, and we have some early odds (from professional) and predictions (from me) on the games that involve either local teams, or ACC foes.

Poinsettia Bowl - Navy Vs. San Diego St.

No odds yet for this one as Navy still has a non-bowl game to play. Or maybe it's just way too close to call! Nah, probably just the former. We'll get back to this one when we know the spread. But for now, I'm taking Ricky Dobbs and Navy. Because frankly I don't know anything about San Diego St., and Ricky Dobbs is the man.

Independence Bowl - Air Force (-2) Vs. Georgia Tech

I can't think of a team that I heard less about this season than Georgia Tech. To be honest, I had no idea that they even played a game. But they did play well enough to make it into a bowl game against Air Force. This is a match up of teams that like to keep it on the ground, so this one may be over in less than two hours, and wouldn't that be nice. I like the Air Force in this one 35-28, because when I can't decide, I always go with the Armed Forces.

Champs Sports Bowl - West Virginia (-2) Vs. N.C. State

Wouldn't hit have been nice if they gave the Terps another crack at West Virginia? I like the Mountaineers in this one 28-21, because I'm still mad at the Wolf Pack.

Military Bowl - Maryland (-9) Vs. East Carolina

This one shouldn't be close at all. Maryland is too good to be in this game, and frankly it is a little bit of an insult that they are in it. East Carolina is a small conference school that should be over matched. But at the same time, this could be the kind of game where the Terps give a big let down. Maybe they aren't thrilled to be here and they come out flat against a team that sees a good opportunity to get a win over an automatic qualifier. Having said all that, I still like the Terps 35-17.

Meineke Car Care Bowl - South Florida Vs. Clemson (-4)

I'm from Connecticut, so I hesitate to say anything negative about my Huskies. But any team that loses at home to them in a game with so much on the line is not very good. Clemson is inconsistent, but they are certainly a much more talented team than the Bulls from South Florida. I always pick talent. Clemson wins this one 31-21.

Sun Bowl - Notre Dame Vs. Miami (-4)

This would ave been a great bowl for Maryland to play in because it would have let me feel like I was personally beating up on Notre Dame, and I can't think of a more enjoyable experience. I very strongly dislike the Irish, and I love everything about the U. If I didn't know the odds, the players on the team, or even what year it was (after 1960) I would pick Miami. The fact that the odds happen to corroborate my stance is just convenient. Miami wins 35-17

Chic-Fil-A Bowl - South Carolina (-3) Vs. Florida St.

The Game Cocks have to still have a bad taste in their mouth from the drubbing Auburn laid on them in the SEC Championship game. I think they come out and play hard against a Florida State team that I don't believe isn't as good as they have shown. South Carolina wins this one 24-21.

Orange Bowl - Stanford (-3) Vs. Virginia Tech

This might be the best match-up of all the BCS Bowls that won't be deciding the National Championship. The classic drop back quarterback takes on perhaps the best two way quarterback in the nation. As much as I fear Virginia Tech, I think that Andrew Luck is just too good. Stanford wins this one 31-24.

Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl - Nevada (-9.5) Vs. Boston College

Nevada beat Boise St. so that makes them the best team in the Country, right? Isn't that how this thing works? Either way, I think Boston College is not equipped to handle their option attack. I like Nevada by a bunch in this one. Even tough the spread is huge, I think they'll still get you a win if you pick them.

The 2010 college football bowl schedule is now official. Here is a list of all of the bowl matchups that matter or may be interesting to local sports fans.

Saturday, December 18

Humanitarian Bowl: Northern Illinois vs. Fresno State at 5:30 on ESPN in Boise. This game is funny because this was the bowl Maryland last played in. The Terps beat Nevada 42-35 in 2008, ending a season that played out a lot like this year. The Terps were tied with three other teams for third place, but slipped to the Humanitarian Bowl due to lack of fan support.

Thursday, December 23

Poinsettia Bowl: Navy vs. San Diego State at 8 p.m. on ESPN. Can Navy close out another solid year? The Midshipmen were probably hoping to do better than 9-3 coming into the final game of the year against Army on Saturday, seeing as they lost their three games by a combined 14 points. They were one goal line punch-in against Maryland and one bad opening stretch against Duke from being 11-1. Nevertheless, they'll head to San Diego to play local club San Diego State (8-4), who hasn't been to a bowl game since 1998.

Monday, December 27

Independence Bowl: Air Force vs. Georgia Tech at 5 p.m. on ESPN2. As bad as Maryland's slip to the Military Bowl was, at least they're staying local instead of being shipped out to Shreveport like Georgia Tech was.

Tuesday, December 28

Champs Sports Bowl: West Virginia vs. N.C. State at 6:30 p.m. on ESPN. Ah yes, the one that got away. Fan support may be the stated reason why the Champs Sports Bowl executives chose N.C. State over Maryland, despite Maryland's head-to-head win, but the better reason is probably that they wanted to avoid a rematch of the September 18 West Virginia-Maryland matchup. Bowl executives don't like rematches.

Wednesday, December 29

Military Bowl: Maryland vs. East Carolina at 2:30 p.m. on ESPN. For obvious reasons.

Thursday, December 30

Music City Bowl: North Carolina vs. Tennessee at 6:40 p.m. on ESPN. The last time Maryland played Tennessee, the Terps stomped them in the 2002 Peach Bowl. I guess Music City Bowl executives also wanted to avoid a rematch.

Friday, December 31

Meineke Car Care Bowl: South Florida vs. Clemson at noon on ESPN. The Terps may have been shafted, but at least they didn't go to a bowl game named after a car repair company.

Sun Bowl: Notre Dame vs. Miami at 2 p.m. on CBS. Alright, fine, there's nothing Maryland could have done to sway Sun Bowl executives from this high-profile matchup. Wait, it's not 2000?

Chick-fil-A Bowl: South Carolina vs. Florida State at 7:30 p.m. on ESPN. I liked this game better when it was called the Peach Bowl.

Monday, January 3

Orange Bowl: Stanford vs. Virginia Tech at 8:30 p.m. on ESPN. The Hokies may be 11-2, but the NCAA doesn't recognize games against FCS opponents like James Madison. So really, they're 11-1, with the only loss coming to Boise State. That actually looks pretty good.

Sunday, January 9

Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl: Nevada vs. Boston College at 9 p.m. on ESPN. I liked this game better when it was called the Emerald Bowl.

The Midshipmen finished the regular season with an 8-3 record. After a heartbreaking loss to Maryland to start the season, Navy was able to go 8-2 the rest of the way, with Ricky Dobbs cementing his place as one of the best players in Navy history. This will be Navy's third appearance in the Pointsetta Bowl.

As for San Diego, they finished 8-4 (5-3 MWC) during the regular season, a 4 game improvement from 2009. Brady Hoke's squad will be making their first bowl appearance since 1998.

The Music City Bowl, in theory, would have been a possible destination for Maryland, but they had their eyes set elsewhere for some time. Now, it's official. The game will feature a matchup between North Carolina and Tennessee, according to the bowl's web site. The game will take place on December 30 in Nashville at 6:30 p.m.

The Tar Heels entered the year with high expectations, but had them all dashed when several players were ruled ineligible. Some returns, but many were out for the entire season. Nevertheless, North Carolina rallied to post a respectable 6-6 record, including a 4-4 mark in the ACC. The highlight of their season was a 37-35 win at Florida State on November 6.

Tennessee was 2-6 at one point this season, but rallied to win four straight games to become bowl eligible. They defeated Memphis, Mississippi, Vanderbilt and Kentucky to become bowl eligible.

Once Virginia Tech won the ACC against Florida State, it clinched a berth in the Orange Bowl. However, it remains to be seen who their opponent will be.

If the projections prove accurate, then the Hokies' opponent will be the Stanford Cardinals. Stanford went 10-1 for Jim Harbaugh, who is in his fourth year as the Cardinal's head coach. Stanford is also led by stud quarterback Andrew Luck, the sophmore sensation who will likely opt to go to the NFL after this season.

As for Frank Beamer's squad, they were able to rebound from an 0-2 start to rally to win 11 straight games, and went on to win the ACC. Senior Tyrod Taylor finished a stellar career at Tech by having a season to remember. Taylor threw for 23 touchdowns and just 4 interceptions, and will lead a red hot Hokie offense into the Orange Bowl.

The Meineke Car Care Bowl was a possible destination for Maryland, but they have elected to go in a different direction. As it turns out, Clemson will take on South Florida in the game, according to the bowl's web site. The game will take place on December 31 at noon at Bank of America stadium in Charlotte, and will be broadcasted on ESPN.

Clemson suffered through a difficult 6-6 season against a very difficult schedule. Only one of those six losses, a 16-10 loss at Boston College on October 30, was a particularly bad loss. The other five came to Auburn, Miami, at North Carolina, at Florida State and to South Carolina. All five of those teams are heading to solid bowl games.

South Florida finished the season 7-5, including a 3-4 mark in the Big East. They lost their final game on Saturday night to Connecticut, 19-16. They did get a big 23-20 win at Miami the week before.

SB Nation's South Florida blog Voodoo Five was the first to report that South Florida would play in the game.
We knew that Florida State would be a part of the 2010 Chick-fil-A Bowl as soon as they lost 44-33 to Virginia Tech in the ACC Championship Game on Saturday night. Now, we know that their opponent will also be a championship game loser.

Florida State's opponent will be South Carolina, the losers of the SEC Championship Game to Auburn, according to the Orlando Sentinel. South Carolina is 9-4 on the season after suffering a 56-17 blowout loss to Auburn on Saturday. Florida State is also 9-4 after their loss to the Hokies. The game will take place on December 31 at 7:30 p.m. in Atlanta.

Still, a 9-4 season and a Chick-fil-A Bowl appearance has to be seen as a relatively successful season for new coach Jimbo Fisher. The Seminoles lost big to Oklahoma early in the year, but rebounded with a strong 6-2 conference record and a big win over arch-rival Florida. Their two conference losses were by a combined six points.

This was also a good season for Steve Spurrier and South Carolina, despite the blowout loss in the SEC Championship Game. They defeated Alabama earlier in the year and also won at Florida. They also nearly beat Auburn the first time they played them. The matchup also pits Spurrier against a team that he sparred many times against when he coached Florida.
