As the NFL's regular season draws closer, former Washington Redskins running back Clinton Portis continues to be a free agent. Portis will have his third workout of the summer, as the Seattle Seahawks are scheduled to bring him in, according to Jason La Canfora of NFL Network.

Former Washington Redskins running back Clinton Portis remains a free agent, but did work out with the Miami Dolphins, according to Pro Football Talk. Portis had previously worked out for the Patriots, and the Dolphins could use a running back with Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams both departing.

However, it appears that Portis has been passed over for one of his former teammates: Larry Johnson. The Dolphins officially announced the signing of Johnson just hours after Portis reportedly came in for the workout. Johnson was in Redskins training camp last year before being cut early in the season. He had just two yards on five carries last year before being released.

That's got to be pretty humiliating for Portis if indeed the Dolphins chose Johnson over him. It makes you wonder where he may play next season, if he plays anywhere at all.

Having already acquired Albert Haynesworth in a trade, the New England Patriots have kicked the tires on another former Washington Redskins star. The team brought in running back Clinton Portis for a workout on Friday, according to Ian R. Rapoport of the Boston Herald.

The Patriots worked out another marquee name yesterday, kicking the tires of former Washington running back Clinton Portis. He was in for a workout along with former Ravens receiver Mark Clayton and linebacker Ricky Brown, a former Raider who played at Boston College, sources said.

Portis was released by the Redskins before the lockout, as many injuries have limited his effectiveness. He gained just 227 yards last season on the ground and was sidelined with a neck injury for much of the year. Rapoport theorizes that the Patriots are just looking at all available options, and nothing is imminent.

The Washington Redskins still have nearly $11 million to spend on new roster additions this off season if they choose to do so, according to NFL.com blogger Jason La Canfora.

The current NFL salary cap shakes out to about $120 million, although enough loopholes exist in the rules to allow teams to spend more than that on their total payroll and still come in under the cap.

With their cap number, the 'Skins are about on par with the NFL average. Of the league's 32 teams, only the St. Louis Rams are currently over the salary cap, which they exceed by about $800,000.

Several smaller-market teams, including the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Buffalo Bills, Kansas City Chiefs, Jacksonville Jaguars, Cincinnati Bengals and Cleveland Browns, have payrolls under $100 million. Starting in 2013, the NFL will install a salary floor of about 89 percent of the salary cap, which would force those teams and several others to add considerably to their payroll.

The Redskins have more cap room than any of their divisional rivals. The Dallas Cowboys have the next-most in the NFC East, with about $6.7 million, then the New York Giants, with $5.3 million, and then the Philadelphia Eagles, whose mere $2.2 million in cap room likely mean their big-spending ways this off season are over.

Overall, Friday night's 16-7 defeat of the Pittsburgh Steelers in the preseason opener was a rousing success for the Washington Redskins. The offense looked like a well-oiled machine, and the defense looked active and was effective in pressuring the quarterback. The only real negative was the kicking game, as least for one of the potential place kickers. Veteran Shayne Graham, brought in to compete with incumbent Skins kicker Graham Gano, had an awful night, missing two field goals, a chip shot from 29 yards out and also a 49 yard attempt. Well, it appears Shayne kicked himself right out of a job with that performance. Via Adam Caplan of Sirius XM radio:

It didn't help Graham that Gano went out and made three kicks in the second half, from 32, 34 and 45 yards out. Gano also has the much stronger leg, and with these new kickoff rules in the NFL, he is likely to assure the Redskins of touchbacks on virtually every one of his kickoffs this season. Note to NFL: change that kickoff rule, and soon, please.

The Redskins will be one of several teams to attend Terrelle Pryor's private workout on Friday in advance of the August 17 supplemental draft, according to a report.

With the NFL announcing that the Supplemental Draft will take place on August 17, former Ohio State quarterback Terrelle Pryor, who was essentially forced to go pro after the tattoo scandal, now has a chance to be drafted into the NFL. He is holding a workout at an unidentified location in Pittsburgh before the supplemental draft, and the Washington Redskins, with their quarterback situation, will be in attendance.

That's according to John Keim of the Washington Examiner:

FYI: Team source says the #Redskins will attend Ohio State QB Terrelle Pryor's workout on Friday. #Buckeyes #NFL

While the thought of a team having such a desperate QB situation that they need to scout Pryor is maybe worth mocking, there's probably no harm in the Redskins at least taking a look.

The supplemental draft is a silent auction, with teams who elect to use a pick thereby losing a pick in the next NFL Draft.

On July 31, 2011, the Redskins re-signed special teams ace Horatio "H.B." Blades to a one-year contract. Presumably, there was some dialogue about how Blades would be more involved on defense this season. Since that day, the Redskins have re-signed incumbent starter Rocky McIntosh, as well as fellow special teams ace linebacker Keyaron Fox from the Steelers.

Now, Blades is mad. He just sent out the following on his Twitter account.
