The Maryland Terrapins must not like making things easy for themselves. Tonight marked their final chance to achieve the elusive "important road win." And the loss means that Maryland will finish this regular season without a single win against a ranked opponent.

The final score indicates that Maryland lost by only 11 points, but this game was never really close. The Tar Heels led by as many as 17 points in the second half, while the Terps never even had a sniff of the lead. North Carolina had more free throws, more three-pointers, more rebounds, more assists, and fewer turnovers.

Terrell Stoglin continues to come into his own, as he led all scorers tonight with 28 points, but it wasn't enough. The good news is that the Terps have now figured out who they can count on regularly (the underclassmen) and who they can't (the seniors).

Maryland has two more games before the start of ACC Tournament on Mar. 10. The team will travel to Miami for a game Wednesday night, and then return home to the Comcast Center for the regular season finale against the Virginia Cavaliers.

Since the opening tip-off, only one team has led tonight. The 19th ranked North Carolina Tar Heels took the lead early in the game, and built upon it throughout the half.

The Maryland Terrapins were within striking distance in the early stages of the game. But their chances of winning have slowly started to slip away, and are now trailing far behind their opponents. You might even say that tonight's game so far is a microcosm of Maryland's season. If the Terrapins lose tonight, they would still have a chance to reach the NCAA Tournament. But that chance is getting slimmer by the day, and might require a small miracle.

Neither team is necessarily shooting well tonight (both are currently just under 35% from the field), but three-point shooting has made the difference so far for North Carolina. The Tar Heels have hit five of their 13 three-point attempts, while Maryland hasn't made a single one. UNC's Tyler Zeller leads all scorers with 14 points, while Terrell Stoglin is Maryland's leading scorer with 11 points.

Although the Terrapins trail, Jordan Williams continues to put on a rebounding clinic. The sophomore has 12 boards already at the break, but the Tar Heels have 14 offensive rebounds.

For Gary Williams and his Maryland Terrapins, tonight's road game at North Carolina is easily the biggest game of the season.

And while you could argue that every game from this point forward is a big game for the Terps, tonight they have a chance to do something they have yet to do all season: defeat a ranked opponent. What's more important is that it may be their final chance to do so before they submit their tournament resume to the selection committee.

The Terps come into this game having won their last two games, ACC victories against N.C. State and Florida State. They currently sit at 7-6 in the conference, and will likely need to either win out the rest of the way or have a great showing in the ACC tournament if they want to earn an NCAA tournament bid.

The good news for the Terps is that they may have found some offense from players other than Jordan Williams. Freshman guard Terrel Stoglin has started to emerge as the secondary scorer, as he has scored 25, 25 and 17 points in his last three games respectively, and is beginning to fill the point guard role that the Terps desperately need.

Although seniors Cliff Tucker and Adrian Bowie have struggled this year, their fellow classmate Dino Gregory has also begun to step his game up lately. In his last five games, Gregory has had double digit point totals, including a career high 18 against N.C. State to go along with 10 rebounds.

The Terps will be going against a Tarheel team that is currently ranked 19th in the nation, and a club that has one nine of its last ten games, with the lone loss being a road defeat to Duke.

Gary Williams knows that tonight is the last big chance for the Terps to get that signature win they desperately need, and he may have recent history on his side. Despite UNC's success over the last few years, the Terps have won four out of their last five games against Roy Williams' club.
