The Capitals had a few needs that they needed to fill as the they got to the trade deadline, and they made some moves that should help fill them. According to Mike Chen at SB Nation, the Capitals are one of the teams that got helpful pieces at the deadline.

Needed: It seems almost blasphemous to say this, but the Capitals need help scoring goals. Yes, really.

Got: On paper, Jason Arnott and Marco Sturm should add tremendous forward depth with goal-scoring ability to the Caps lineup. Same thing with two-way defenseman Dennis Wideman. Will that translate to goals? We'll see if major roster moves like these help or hurt the Caps' chemistry.

It's not really all that blasphemous if you've watched the Capitals play this year, actually. They needed depth at the center position, and Arnott should really be able to help there. Arnott has 13 goals and 11 assists for the New Jersey Devils this year, and could bring a lot of toughness to whichever line coach Boudreau decides to put him on.

The other two players will probably help as well, but not in the way that Arnott will. He is a goal scorer who plays a position that the Capitals sorely needed depth at. But his question about the chemistry is a valid one. We'll have to see how it all plays out.

The Jason Arnott trade made by the Washington Capitals could be one of the biggest in recent memory. As the final minutes of the NHL Trade Deadline quickly approached, the Capitals continued to make deals. Shortly after the clock struck 3 p.m EST, one that could have an immediate impact was made when the Caps acquired Arnott from the New Jersey Devils in exchange for David Steckel and a 2012 second-round draft pick.

Arnott, a 17-year veteran, will now become the elder statesman of the Capitals. He is now the regular season (1,161) and postseason (106) leader in terms of games played and joins MIke Knuble as the only current Capital with a Stanley Cup. Yet, Knuble only played in three games with the 1997-98 Detroit Red Wings, while Arnott had 20 points in 23 games to lead the Devils to the 2000 Stanley Cup. Add that to his leadership qualities (he captained the Nashville Predators from 2007-10) and it's undeniable that Arnott knows how to lead and knows to win.

The second-line center position has yet to be solidified this season despite having rookies Mathieu Perreault and Marcus Johansson alternate attempts. There is no question that Arnott will fill that role and make opposing defenses think twice before putting their best defenders on the Caps' top line, which includes Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom. Arnott has scored 20-plus goals 12 times during his career, including 11 of the last 12 seasons, and 30-plus goals three times.

A proven veteran, Arnott will give the Caps the type of player that they've lacked since Sergei Fedorov left after the 2008-2009 season. Expect Arnott's experience to play a big role in shaping the talent around him in Washington.

While it has not been officially announced by the team, the Washington Capitals have possibly brought in the missing link that they need in the waning moments of the NHL Trade Deadline.

The Capitals have acquired center Jason Arnott from the New Jersey Devils in exchange for David Steckel and a second-round pick in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft.

Arnott's acquisition was the third move that the Caps have made within the last three days and the second Monday; they claimed veteran winger Marco Sturm off waivers Saturday and received Florida Panthers defenseman Dennis Wideman in exchange for prospect Jake Hauswirth and a 2011 third-round pick.

Arnott automatically becomes the leader in both regular-season and postseason games for the Caps and has a 2000 Stanley Cup with the Devils to boot. The 17-year veteran, who has 13 goals and 11 assists on the season, will surely become the Capitals' second-line center, which has been a problem area for them in recent years.

The Washington Capitals finally have the veteran second-line center they have been seeking all season, making a move just before the NHL trade deadline. The team has acquired Jason Arnott from the New Jersey Devils for center David Steckel, according to a report by David Millard of Sportsnet.ca.

The 36-year old Arnott has plenty of Stanley Cup experience from his days with the Devils, and remains a very solid player even at his advanced age. He has 13 goals and 11 assists in 62 games for the Devils this season. He also does not have a long-term contract, so this is very clearly a move for this season and this season only.

A couple weeks ago, our own Adam Vingan recommended the Capitals acquire Arnott at the NHL trade deadline.

Putting Arnott on the second line would make the opposition think twice before putting their best defenders against the top line. He has scored 20-plus goals 12 times (including 10 of his last 11 seasons) and 30-plus goals three times. Arnott is an excellent two-way player that plays great defense while also using his size to wreak havoc in front of the net.

Arnott's contract expires at the end of the season, so if things don't work out, the Capitals would not feel obligated to re-sign.

In return, the Capitals will surrender Steckel. Steckel is very good at one thing, ranking as the league leader in face-off percentage among centers, but was largely a one-dimensional player otherwise. He too has a somewhat prohibitive contract, as he's owed $1.1 million for the next two seasons following this one.
