Hampton has won the MEAC Tournament and will advance to the 2011 NCAA Tournament. The Pirates topped Morgan State, 60-55, to win the conference's automatic bid.

Brandon Tunnel scored 20 points to carry Hampton to the win in a game that was ugly for both teams. Neither club shot better than 36 percent from the field, but Hampton outscored Morgan State by eight points on the free-throw line to get the win. The game effectively ended with 46 seconds remaining when Tunnel scored a righty layup and drew the foul to put Hampton up by six points.

Hampton returns to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2006. Morgan State's two-year reign of the MEAC Conference Tournament comes to an end, but not after a valiant effort. Reggie Jackson scored 25 points for Morgan State, but it wasn't enough to beat a Hampton team that was just deeper and stronger.

Morgan State has made it back to the MEAC Championship game for the third straight season. The Bears upset top-seeded Bethune-Cookman in Friday's semifinals, 61-48, behind 22 points off the bench from Kevin Thompson. They will face No. 2 seed Hampton, who routed Norfolk State, 85-61, in the other semifinal.

Morgan State is looking to secure its third straight MEAC title after winning the tournament in 2008/09 and 2009/10. This year's team was weaker than the last two clubs that won it. Todd Bozeman's squad was just 15-13 entering the 2011 MEAC Tournament, and had the daunting task of facing Bethune-Cookman in the semifinals. But Bozeman's squad still got the job done, and will now face a Hampton squad that is playing as well as any team in the league.

The game will take place at 2 p.m. on ESPN. A berth in the NCAA Tournament is on the line in this one.

The 2011 MEAC Tournament has kind of a weird structure. They played two first round games on Tuesday. On Wednesday they played two quarterfinal matchups and the third and final first round matchup. There were two local teams in action yesterday and neither fared very well.

Howard falls to Norfolk St. 68-53

Hampton runs away from Maryland Eastern Shore 77-55

Top-seed Bethune Cookman beats South Carolina St. 66-50

It's pretty odd that the closest of thee three games was decided by 15 points. I'm not sure what that says about the competitive balance in the conference, or the relative ability of the top teams, but it is an interesting development.Norfolk St.'s win was a first round game, so they will play again today. Here is the schedule for today's two quarterfinal matchups.

Norfolk St. Vs. Coppin St., 6 p.m.

North Carolina A&T Vs. Morgan St., 8 p.m.

As always, we'll be following these results, and we'll relay them to you in this StoryStream.

The 2011 MEAC Conference Tournament got underway yesterday, but in an interesting scheduling, let's call it a situation, only two first round games were played on the first day of action. Let's recap.

Maryland Eastern Shore beats Florida A&M 87-85 in 2OT:

Sometimes a game can be boring and go into overtime, but that wasn't the case with this one. This had all the drama and suspense you would expect from the first round of a small, not really even mid-major conference tournament. Hillary Haley made a three-pointer with 17 seconds left in the first overtime to send the game into a sixth frame, and his layup with just over a minute left in the second overtime put Maryland Eastern Shore ahead for good.Maryland Eastern Shore will play Hampton today.

South Carolina St. beats Delaware St. 64-59:

South Carolina St. was led by Darnell Porter and his 15 points. he was the only starter in double figures, but a balanced scoring effort from everyone who logged minutes were enough for a win.South Carolina St. will play top seed Bethune-Cookman today.

You might not have been paying a lot of attention to the MEAC Conference this year, but they have just as many automatic qualifiers as any other Conference in the Country. That will probably be the only team they put into the tournament this year, but they still have that one automatic qualifier.

Bethune-Cookman is the tournaments top seed after winning the regular season conference tournament. Maryland Eastern-Shore, the local team and reason we are covering the tournament, is the tenth seed. Here are the first round matchups, from the Conference's official site.

The schedule is a iittle bit odd, because there are only two first round games played on Tuesday, with the rest overlapping with quarterfinal games on Wednesday. The two first round game that will be played on Tuesday are the aforementioned Maryland Eastern-Shore Vs. Florida A&M at 6:30 p.m., and South Carolina St. Vs. Delware St. at 9 p.m.

We'll be updating this stream with news and notes from the tournament as it progresses.
