After five innings, where they were trailing 3-1, it didn't look like the Nationals would be able to rally to get back into this game.

So much for that.

The Nationals mounted a rally in the 8th inning to tie the game at three runs a piece. Ian Desmond singled in Ivan Rodriguez for the first run, and Rick Ankiel drove in Jerry Hairston Jr. on a RBI groundout.

After a scoreless ninth for both teams, it had to take two extra frames to settle this one.

After Drew Storen averted a scare in the 10th inning to preserve the game, the Nats were able to come to bat in the 11th to deliver the decisive blows of the game.

As the inning lead off, the Nationals executed fundamental baseball to get the go ahead run. First baseman Adam LaRoche singled, which led to pitcher Jordan Zimmermann (who was pinch hitting for Storen) to execute a perfect sac bunt to get LaRoche over to second base. Two batters later, Pudge delivered again with a single to put the Nats up 4-3.

But the Nats weren't done there. With two men on, Laynce Nix delivered a three run homerun to give the Nats a 7-3 lead which would send Washington out of Citi Field with their first series victory.

The Nationals are trailing the Mets 3-1 after five innings at Citi Field. Jason Marquis has given up three earned runs with just one walk and seven strikeouts.

The scoring started for the Mets thanks to a pair of RBI singles in the first inning by David Wright and Angel Pagan. The next inning, the Nats got one run back, when Ivan Rodriguez got an RBI ground out (after Jim Riggleman called a double steal). The third Mets run came in the bottom of the fifth when Ike Davis singled in former National Willie Harris.

Mets starter Chris Young has been solid thus far, giving up just one run on one hit against Nationals hitting through five innings. Had it not been for Riggleman's double steal call, Young would not have given up the long run he has given up so far.

Marquis has had a steady afternoon so far and will remain in the game going into the sixth inning. The question is: Will he get some run support? He has certainly pitched will enough to win a game like this. But unfortunately for Marquis, Young is pitching extremely well right now.

After a disappointing 8-4 loss last night to the Mets, in which Jerry Hairston Jr. made a critical error in left field the bottom of the 6th, the Nats hope to rebound and still cash in on their chance to get their first series victory of the season.

Today Washington will send out Jason Marquis in the series finale to help earn said series victory. In his last start, Marquis held the Florida Marlins to two runs on six hits in 6 1/3 innings.

The Nationals will be at a disadvantage, however, as they will be losing their most important player:

That's a huge blow to the Nats, who hopefully won't have to endure Zimmerman being out for any lengthy period of time. He is too important to the offense for him to be out more than a few games.
