"Patrick Nero rose to the top of an outstanding pool of candidates. He has all the right skills and experience and a strong commitment to excellence, as well as to the academic success of our student athletes," said GW President Steven Knapp said in a press release. "I am impressed by his strategic vision and look forward to working with him to build the future of athletics at George Washington."

Nero has been the commissioner of the America East conference for the past five years, a conference that includes Maine, Boston University and Northeastern. Prior to that, he was the athletic director at Maine.

Kvancz had been the athletic director since 1994 before deciding to retire in February. The 65-year old is remaining with the school as a special advisor.
