The Washington Nationals went into the ninth inning of Wednesday night's game with a 3-2 lead and a chance to keep themselves out of last place in the NL East, but by the end of the first half of the inning reliever Sean Burnett buried any chance of victory by giving up four runs to the New York Mets who ended up winning the game **.

Burnett gave up three straight singles to begin the ninth before finally getting Chin-lung Hu to fly out to Jayson Werth, but it was a sacrifice fly to score Jayson Bay to tie the game. Ike Davis then scored on a Josh Thole ground out and after walking Jose Reyes Burnett gave up a two-run double to Daniel Murphy. It took eight batters and four runs to get manager Jim Riggleman out of the dugout to hook Burnett and call in Drew Storen to finally get David Wright to strike out for the third out.

Offensively the Nationals three runs came from a Michael Morse sac fly in the fourth, a Rick Ankiel RBI double in the fifth and a Wilson Ramos sac fly in the eighth. Recently called up outfielder Roger Bernadina went 2-for-2 with a single and a double.

It was an abysmal performance by both team and manager and one that has finally placed the Nats in the cellar of the NL East. The Nationals are now fifth in the NL East with a 10-13 record.

Right fielder Jayson Werth has two hits off New York Mets pitcher R.A. Dickey, Rick Ankiel had a late fifth-inning RBI double and Tom Gorzelanny has pitched noticeably better than his previous three starts, all of which has helped the Washington Nationals pull away from the Mets and take a 2-1 lead going into the sixth inning.

The Mets struck first in the top of the third inning when Mike Nickeas scored on a Justin Turner single. One inning later Michael Morse hit a sacrifice fly that scored Werth after Werth hit a lead off single to start the inning.

This game is a battle for the NL East basement with the loser becoming the division's fifth place team. The Mets already occupy the spot being a half game back from the Nationals and would love to change that with a sixth straight win Wednesday night at Nationals Park.

The game has been subject to bad weather. The start time was delayed 45 minutes due to rain storms moving through the D.C. area with a possibility of more later in the night.

The pressure is on Washington Nationals starter Tom Gorzelanny (0-2, 4.96 ERA) Wednesday night, as the team turns to the southpaw to help them snap a three-game losing streak while trying to snap a five-game winning streak by the New York Mets at the same time. Gorzelanny hasn't had a whole lot of success in his first three starts as a Nationals pitcher. He has given up home runs in every one of his starts this season and four in total on the year, which leads all Nationals pitchers.

He will be opposed by the Mets' R.A. Dickey (1-3, 4.10 ERA), who possesses a dangerous knuckleball. However, Dickey has lost his last three starts. The Nationals faced off against Dickey before on April 8 and beat him 6-2 in the Mets' Citi Field opener. Nationals catcher Wilson Ramos is in the lineup for the third game in a row to give Dickey trouble, thanks to a 3-for-4, three RBI, two home-run performance Tuesday night.
