How did each of the NFC East teams do in the first round of the 2011 NFL Draft? We offer our thoughts and ask for your own.

Now that the first round of the 2011 NFL Draft is in the books, let's take a look at how each of the four teams in the NFC East fared with their draft results. The Dallas Cowboys, Washington Redskins, New York Giants and Philadelphia Eagles all made first-round selections, and since it's never too early to do so, let's hand out some preliminary NFL Draft grades. The key word here is "preliminary," because there are six rounds to go and much of the team's performance depends on those six rounds. But still, we're a culture of immediacy, so let's grade 'em!

Dallas Cowboys: A-. The Cowboys desperately needed help up front to make things easier on all those talented skill players they love to say they have. What good is having Dez Bryant and Miles Austin on the outside and Jason WItten in the middle when you can't give Tony Romo enough time to find them? What good is having a good running game when you can't block for them? In this way, picking Tyron Smith out of USC with the No. 9 overall pick was a very smart move. Smith was the No. 1 offensive tackle on most draft projection boards, and getting him at No. 9 was nice value. He's a natural right tackle that will likely have to switch to left tackle to replace <strike>Marc Colombo</strike> Doug Free, which could hold him back a bit. But he's also just 20 and has plenty of room for growth. I hate to admit it, but the prospect of all those offensive weapons behind a decent offensive line does scare me a bit.

New York Giants: A. Getting Prince Amukamara out of Nebraska with the No. 19 pick is a huge steal, and the pressure is now on Ryan Kerrigan to live up to being picked over him. Ironically, the Redskins probably need a cornerback more than the Giants, because it's looking more and more like Carlos Rogers is leaving the team. This isn't to put down Kerrigan at all, because he's a good pick, but it remains to be seen whether passing on Amukamara is going to haunt the Redskins. The Giants have bigger needs than cornerback, but the value is too much to pass up, and the Giants could use some more help preventing big plays anyway.

Philadelphia Eagles: C+. The Eagles needed another offensive lineman, and Danny Watkins out of Baylor will fill that void. Watkins will certainly be able to play right away, but that's kind of the rub. At age 26, how much upside does he really have? Isn't there a concern that he was only good in college because he was most physically developed than many of the players he went against? That's my concern with this pick.

Washington Redskins: A-. Maybe I'm grading on a curve here, because the Redskins have disappointed us so much over the years and because there was a legitimate concern they would waste the No. 10 pick on a quarterback. But if you could have scripted the perfect draft for the Redskins, it would involve them trading down and picking up additional picks while still solving their defensive problems. In that sense, mission accomplished.

The trade with the Jaguars was a very good trade. It remains to be seen whether they may have passed up a franchise quarterback in Blaine Gabbert, but so much of a quarterback's success is due to their surrounding environment. A rookie quarterback picked high in the draft would never have developed well with the Redskins' poor offensive line, lack of skill-position players and poor defense. He would have gotten pounded every game, and his defense would have given him large deficits to overcome. Building the rest of the foundation is much more important than hoping a young quarterback can overcome all of that, no matter who it is. Getting an additional second-round pick to do so is huge. The Redskins need quantity, not quality.

As for Kerrigan, it's tough to judge him because he will need to make a transition to the 3-4. He certainly has the work ethic to do so, which is a plus, but even the hardest workers can struggle. Nevertheless, besides Amukamara, I have trouble seeing another defensive player that was available who can make as much of an immediate impact as Kerrigan. I think it's a safe pick, and the Redskins need safe picks right now.

The first round of the 2011 NFL Draft has come to a close, and honestly, I haven't quite made sense of it yet. Nor has Mike Mayock's translator. Maybe you have, but I need some Bagel Bites and shut-eye before I can truly assess these undertakings, starting with Carolina boring us and taking bookworm Cam Newton.

1 - Cam Newton, QB, Auburn, to the Carolina Panthers.

2 - Von Miller, LB, Texas A&M, to the Denver Broncos

3 - Marcel Dareus, DT, Alabama, to the Buffalo Bills.

4 - A,J. Green, WR, Georgia, to the Cincinnati Bengals.

5 - Patrick Peterson, CB, LSU to the Arizona Cardinals

6 Julio Jones, WR, Alabama, to the Atlanta Falcons in a trade with the Cleveland Browns. The Falcons gave up their 2011 second- and fourth-round pick, as well as a 2012 first- and fourth-round pick.

7 Aldon Smith, DE, Missouri, to the San Francisco 49ers

8 Jake Locker, QB, Washington, to the Tennessee Titans.

9.Tyron Smith, OT, USC to the Dallas Cowboys

10. Blaine Gabbert, QB, Missouri, to the Jacksonville Jaguars in a trade with the Washington Redskins. The Redskins get the 16th and 49th overall picks.

11. J.J. Watt, DE, Wisconsin, to the Houston Texans

12 Christian Ponder, QB Florida State, to the Minnesota Vikings.

13. Nick Fairley, DT, Auburn, to the Detroit Lions.

14 Robert Quinn, DE, North Carolina, to the St. Louis Rams.

15. Mike Pouncey OL, Florida, to the Miami Dolphins

16. Ryan Kerrigan, DE, Purdue, to the Washington Redskins

17. Nate Soldier, OT, Colorado, to the New England Patriots

18. Corey Liuget, DT, Illinois, to the San Diego Chargers

19. Prince Amukamara, CB, Nebraska, to the New York Giants

20. Adrian Clayborn, DE, Iowa, to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers

21. Phil Taylor, DT, Baylor, to the Cleveland Browns in a trade with the Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs pick up the No. 27 pick and the Browns' third-round selection.

22. Anthony Castonzo, OT, Boston College, to the Indianapolis Colts

23. Danny Watkins, OG, Baylor, to the Philadelphia Eagles

24. Cameron Jordan, DE, California, to the New Orleans Saints

25. James Carpenter, OL, Alabama, to the Seattle Seahawks

26. Jonathan Baldwin, WR, Pittsburgh, to the Kansas City Chiefs. The Ravens ran out of time and the Chiefs leapfrogged them.

27. Jimmy Smith, CB, Colorado, to the Baltimore Ravens

28. Mark Ingram, RB, Alabama, to the New Orleans Saints. The New England Patriots will receive a 2012 first-round pick.

29. Gabe Carimi, OT, Wisconsin, to the Chicago Bears

30. Muhammad Wilkerson, DE, Temple, to the New York Jets

31. Cameron Heyward, DE, Ohio State, to the Pittsburgh Steelers

32. Derek Sherrod, OT, Mississippi State, to the Green Bay Packers

The Prime Time portion of the 2011 NFL Draft has come to a close with the selection of offensive lineman Derek Sherrod of Mississippi State with the 32nd pick in the first round of this year's meat-market spectacle. Despite the legal battle enveloping the proceedings, tonight's draft went off as expected, with the usual unexpected results.

However, the Packers selection of an agile, lengthy lineman should surprise no one, as they look for all the protection they can get for Super Bowl winning quarterback Aaron Rodgers (do I hear Favres burning?)

The drafting of Sherrod ended a first round that saw multiple trades, and of course many surprise selections, at least to the armchair G.M.s both in attendance and henpecking away on keyboards.

Perhaps most surprising of all if you reside in the DC metro area was the Washington Redskins ability to actually trade down and acquire picks in a draft, in the process perhaps adding another piece to an Orakpo/Landry-led defense that could be one of the NFL's best.

The 2011 NFL Draft, despite all the legal shenanigoats, has been a fast and furious affair entertaining fans all evening long. There were lots of interesting picks, with Blaine Gabbert's fall finally ending at No. 10....and me jumping the gun already...

At #9 to the Dallas Cowboys - Tyron Smith, offensive line. Tony Romo approves.

#10 - Blaine Gabbert, Jacksonville Jaguars - You sir do not dress as well as our incumbent QB but you will do.

#11 - J.J Watt, defensive end out of Wisconsin. I mean, the Texans HAD to take a defensive guy, right?

#12 - Christian Ponder. Minnesota Vikings. At least they got the pick in on time. Too bad it was for a QB they could have wrangled in Round 2.

#13 - Nick Fairley, Detroit Lions. Um, thank god I'm not a fan of a NFC North team, because if this kid's head is screwed on straight a Fairley/Suh defensive line combo is decade-long destructive.

#14 - St Louis Rams - Robert Quinn. Miss a year of school due to suspension? Not a concern in the 2011 NFL. Ability to disrupt a pocket? Exactly what the Rams need.

#15 Mike Pouncey- The Miami Dolphins think they took Xomat, got Tamox. I'm not gonna tell 'em. Are you?

With the eighth pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, the Tennessee Titans selected Jake Locker, quarterback from the University of Washington. This is a shocking selection, especially with Blaine Gabbert of Missouri on the board, and it takes away a potential Redskins selection at No. 10. Redskins coach Mike Shanahan has long coveted Locker. Instead, he will have to take someone else to lead his team.

Locker was a consensus top 10 pick last year, but elected to return to school. His draft stock suffered as he had a difficult season, showing accuracy issues throughout. Obviously, though, it didn't affect his stock that much, as the Titans elected to take him despite all of these problems. Tennessee certainly needs a quarterback, with Vince Young certainly on the way out and Kerry Collins old and ineffective. Most just felt they would take Gabbert instead.

The Dallas Cowboys, at No. 9, are now on the clock.

With the seventh pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, the San Francisco 49ers have selected Aldon Smith, defensive end from Missouri. The pick is a mild surprise, with many thinking that Smith's teammate Blaine Gabbert would be the pick here, but instead, it'll be Smith.

Smith will likely be an outside linebacker for the 49ers, where he'll team with Patrick Willis and an already strong defense. He was a defensive end in college, but in the 49ers' 3-4 scheme, he'll certainly need to make the transition. The 49ers must think that he can make that transition, otherwise, they would not have picked him.

It is certainly a surprise that new coach Jim Harbaugh picked Smith over Gabbert, considering his background as an offensive mind. I guess this means that Harbaugh has more confidence in Alex Smith than most. This is surprising.

The Tennessee Titans, at No. 8, are now on the clock.

The Atlanta Falcons have traded a 2011 second and fourth round pick, as well as a 2012 first and fourth round pick in order to choose wide receiver Julio Jones from the University of Alabama. Coach Mike Smith and GM Thomas Dimitroff have decided Jones was a can't miss prospect and jumped the board to make him a part of their NFC South team.

The Falcons are a team on the cusp of success, and the difference-maker might just be a freakish athlete like Jones. He will save Matt Ryan on any misthrow, he can create separation on even the most basic routes, and most importantly he is a tremendous target in the redzone.

I can't mention his physicality as a wideout without owing the NFL Network some money, but yeah, Julio is a big boy. And he makes his teammates better. A smart deal by the Red Sox of the NFC South, if you will.
