The Washington Nationals ended their three game losing streak Friday night in a 10-inning affair with the Florida Marlins at Sun Life Stadium. First baseman Adam LaRoche hit a sac fly to bring in Jayson Werth in the top of the 10th inning to give the Nationals a 3-2 win.

As they have for most of the season, the Nats won the day on the backs of some good pitching. Starter Jordan Zimmermann pitched six innings giving up two runs on five hits and striking out six. He was pulled in the seventh inning and replaced by Tyler Clippard who perhaps had the most remarkable performance of the night. Clippard came into the game for just two innings, but struck out all six batters he faced. He pitched just 22 pitches and got 11 swing and misses.

Drew Storen pitched a strong ninth and came out for the tenth, but ran into trouble after Greg Dobbs and John Buck had back-to-back singles putting two men on base with no outs. Storen battled and got Omar Infante to ground out while holding the tying run at third and then struck out Wes Helms on the next at-bat. Sean Burnett was then called in to get the final out of the game which he did by causing Chris Coghlan to line out to Jerry Hairston Jr. to seal the victory.

Storen picked up the win and is now 2-1 with a 0.51 ERA and Sean Burnett picked up his fourth save of the year. The Nats other runs were scored by Hairston Jr. and shortstop Ian Desmond.

The Nats improve their record to 15-17 and remain in fourth place in the NL East.

The Washington Nationals have put two runs across the plate and pitcher Jordan Zimmermann held off the Florida Marlins with a one-hitter for four innings in the first game of a three game series at Sun Life Stadium. The Nationals lead 2-1 going into the sixth inning.

Zimmermann was superb through four giving up only one hit, but he hit a rough patch in the fifth when he allowed two Marlins to get on second and third base with no outs. Omar Infante hit a sac fly to score a run, but Zimmermann got out of the inning without further damage after Ivan Rodriguez and Alex Cora caught John Buck stealing. Zimmermann then struck out Ricky Nolasco for the third out.

His support has come from centerfielder Jerry Hairston Jr. and shortstop Ian Desmond. Hairston Jr. hit a RBI double in the second inning to score Ivan Rodriguez and Desmond brought in Adam LaRoche on a sac fly in the fourth. The Nats are outhitting the Marlins with four hits to their one and the Marlins have had one error while the Nationals have had none.

The Washington Nationals are glad to be out of Philadelphia where they lost three straight games and got swept by the NL East leading Phillies, but moving from Philly to Miami brings little relief as they now are faced with the challenge of beating the Florida Marlins on their home turf Friday night.

The Marlins hold second place in the NL East and like the Phillies they have had uncanny success against Washington. Florida has a record of 69-41 against the Nationals. When the Marlins play the Nats at home in Sun Life Stadium, they enjoy a 38-19 record.

Nationals right hander Jordan Zimmermann (2-4, 4.29 ERA) looks to halt the Nats current losing streak. Zimmermann helped stop the Nationals last three game losing streak by going six innings and only giving up two runs in a victory against the San Francisco Giants on May 1st. Marlins pitcher Ricky Nolasco (3-0, 3.35 ERA) will be going against a Nationals offense that still has yet to discover the proper means to plate more runs consistently. Nolasco has not faced the Nationals yet this season, but holds a 8-3 with a 4.17 ERA lifetime record against them.
