The Washington Nationals bullpen made it a closer affair than it should have been, but the Nats were able to leave Turner Field Tuesday night as 7-6 winners over the Atlanta Braves.

Though the Braves had more hits during the game, it was the Nats that capitalized more on the ones they did get. Both outfielders Laynce Nix and Jayson Werth hit three-run home runs to lead bursts of Nationals offense. Pitcher Jason Marquis used this backing to hold off the Braves for seven-innings of seven hit, three-run ball. However, when the Nationals bullpen moved onto the mound some trouble mounted.

Reliever Sean Burnett gave up two runs after relieving Marquis in the eighth-inning and Tyler gave up one more after a solo home run from Dan Uggla. After the Nationals offense failed to score any runs in the top of the ninth the game belonged to Nationals reliever Drew Storen. Storen was able to get three-up and three-down to preserve the Nationals win and earn his eighth save of the season.

The Nats are in fourth place in the NL East with a 17-18 record.

Tuesday night's game is in the sixth-inning and the Washington Nationals have jumped on top of the Atlanta Braves 7-1. The Nationals have discovered their long ball again and two home runs from two different players have helped Washington get on top and stay on top.

In fourth-inning Nationals outfielder Laynce delivered a three-run bomb off Atlanta pitcher Tim Hudson scoring Adam LaRoche and Wilson Ramos. Then Roger Bernadina and Jerry Hairston Jr. scored on a fifth-inning three run homer from right fielder Jayson Werth. Werth also had the other Nationals run back in the first inning when Werth grounded into a double play, but Bernadina was able to score.

The Braves have collected two errors on the night and the Nationals have taken full advantage. Hudson, usually dominant, seems to be having a rough time wrangling in the Nationals while Jason Marquis has pitched magnificently giving up only three hits, two walks, striking out one and only giving up one run off a Martin Prado home run in the fourth.

The Washington Nationals come into Atlanta on Tuesday night in a state of still finding themselves and their offense. The Nationals had Monday off to think about what they can do to avoid what happened in the last game in Florida on Sunday, when they were blanked 8-0 by the Florida Marlins and no-hit for seven innings of play.

If the Nationals are hoping to use their time in Atlanta as a learning experience, they have chosen a classroom that will not be friendly to them. The Atlanta Braves are 10-9 at Turner Field this year and will be throwing out starter Tim Hudson (4-2, 2.86 ERA) to stifle the Nationals. Hudson is coming off a one-hit shutout of the Milwaukee Brewers, and a day of rest that should have the right hander ready and raring to go.

The Nationals are throwing out a fierce competitor of their own in Jason Marquis (3-1, 3.66 ERA) who is arguably the Nationals' best right handed pitcher this season. Marquis will be burning with the fires of redemption, as he is coming off his worst start of the season against the Philadelphia Phillies, where he gaveĀ up seven runs in five innings and was tagged with a nasty loss. The Nationals are hoping having a day of rest themselves after a streak of 16 consecutive games played without a day off is enough to recharge their offense and their push to get up the NL East standings.
