Remember the horrible call that was made at the end of Friday's Mets-Nationals game that cost Jayson Werth a base hit during a key ninth-inning rally? It didn't make general manager Mike Rizzo happy either, and he ran after umpire Phil Cuzzi to tell him about it. That may have gotten Rizzo into hot water.

According to multiple reports, Major League Baseball will investigate a report filed by the umpiring crew against Rizzo for his post-game behavior. Via the New York Daily News:

But multiple baseball sources said MLB officials will investigate a report filed by the umpiring crew after the game about a verbal altercation between them and Nationals GM Mike Rizzo as they were leaving the field after the final out.

Immediately after the game, one of the umpires told Mets security guards outside their dressing room to "find the guy in the suit," apparently referring to Rizzo. Mets security VP Rob Kasdon arrived a few minutes later armed with a Nationals media guide to pore over headshots to identify Rizzo, sources said.

This all seems like a waste of time to me. The Nationals are struggling, Rizzo was upset and he may have flipped out a bit. Not to wish too much ill will on the umpire, but it's best everyone just moves on.

Of course, it didn't help that the first-base umpire completely botched an easy call, calling Jayson Werth out at first place even though first baseman Daniel Murphy was very clearly off the bag.
↵
The Nationals had a runner on second base and one out in the bottom of the ninth inning when Werth drilled a ground ball to third base. Justin Turner got to it with a nice backhand, bobbled the ball, then threw it to first. It was a wide throw, and Murphy tried to stretch to grab it, but his stretch both took him off the bag and came too late. Still, Werth was called out, and Adam LaRoche grounded out thereafter to end the game.
↵
It was a huge call, because having men on first and third with one out is much more threatening than having a man on third and two outs. Of course, given how LaRoche has been playing, he probably would have grounded into a double play anyway.

The Washington Nationals managed to avoid getting no-hit against the New York Mets on Thursday afternoon, but that's about the only silver lining they can take. The Nationals couldn't manage a hit against Mets started Dillon Gee until the sixth inning and had just three hits total in a 1-0 loss.

The Nationals drop to 20-23 on the year, one game behind the Mets for last place in the NL East. Livan Hernandez was the hard-luck loser, giving up just one run in seven innings to drop to 3-6 on the year. Gee moves to 3-0 on the year, giving up just two hits in seven and two-thirds innings.

The Mets got their only run in the bottom of the fourth inning. They put two runners on base with two out, and Justin Turner lined a single up the middle to score John Thole. The Nationals threatened in the ninth inning when Laynce Nix hit a one-out double, but Jayson Werth was victimized by a questionable call on a ground ball for the second out. It looked like Daniel Murphy's foot came off the bag, but Werth was ruled out. Adam LaRoche then grounded out to end the game.

The Washington Nationals will try to get their offense back on track when they face the New York Mets at Citi Field in a game that starts at 1 p.m. and can be seen on MASN.

The story of this game, as it has been for the past few games it seems, will be the weather. The forecast shows rain again this afternoon. But based on what we saw at the end of the game last night, the stadium officials are, let's just say hesitant, to call a game. They are sort of like the opposite of the Nationals in that way.

The Nats will send old reliable Livan Hernandez to the mound this afternoon. He's the only guy I think won't have any trouble with the rain, because it doesn't seem like he lets that kind of stuff affect him. His counterpart will be Dillon Gee, whom the Nats have only faced one time before. That was his major league debut last September when he allowed just two hits over seven innings. Hopefully they have a little bit more film on him this time.

We'll be following this game in this stream, but you can head over to Federal Baseball for more information on the Nationals.
