Wearing their 1936 Washington Senators throwback uniforms the Washington Nationals did something the old Senators rarely did: win. The Nationals beat the San Diego Padres by the score of 2-1 taking the third game of a four game series and the series lead going into the final game on Sunday. If the Nationals can win Sunday, it will be the first time the Nats take a series from the Padres in San Diego since 2001 when the franchise was known as the Montreal Expos.

It is the second game in a row the Nationals grind out a 2-1 victory over their West Coast opponents.

Starter John Lannan gets his fourth win of the season pitching six-innings of one run ball on six hits, walking two and striking out one. Todd Coffey and Tyler Clippard each pitched in scoreless relief and Drew Storen earned his 14th save of the season. On the offensive side of the ball, second baseman Danny Espinosa hit an RBI double and Wilson Ramos rounded out the scoring with an RBI single.

During the game a Padres Ryan Ludwick home run was determined to be foul and overturned by instant replay.

The Nationals move to 28-36 and remain entrenched in the cellar of the NL East.

Instant replay played a big part in the current Washington Nationals 2-1 lead over the San Diego Padres in the fifth-inning. Natstown groans were turned to sighs of relief as instant replay was used to overturn a Padres home run into a foul ball.

Pitcher John Lannan unleashed a pitch that Ryan Ludwick smashed and thought stayed fair as it hit the brick wall of the of the Western Metal Supply Co., but the Nationals challenged the call as they are allowed by MLB rules. After a few nervous minutes the ball was determined to go foul preserving the Nationals 2-1 lead. It certainly put Lannan's nerves to rest as he had already given up a home run to Anthony Rizzo in the second-inning, Rizzo's first big league home run.

The Nationals collected their two runs in the top of the first. Second baseman Danny Espinosa hit a RBI double scoring Ian Desmond and later Espinosa scored on a Wllson Ramos RBI single.

Manager Jim Riggleman decided to make a few changes in the line-up Saturday night and they are unique to say the least. Sensing he wasn't getting the production needed and expected at the lead-off position (he wasn't), Riggleman switched out outfielder Roger Bernadina for Jayson Werth.

Werth will be leading off against the San Diego Padres and pitcher Clayton Richard (2-7, 4.20 ERA) and it is the first time the scruffy right fielder will lead off this season. Bernadina has been moved to batting ninth which is usually reserved for the pitcher. Pitcher John Lannan (3-5, 3.79 ERA) will actually be batting eighth in hopes that Werth has more opportunities to drive in runs. Werth isn't your typical lead off hitter, but his .345 on-base percentage is one of Riggleman's only options right now.

If only runs were given for creativity.

The line-up isn't the only thing changing tonight. The Nationals and Padres will be sporting throwback uniforms from 1936 Saturday night as part of the 75th Anniversary of the San Diego franchise's inaugural season. The Nats will be sporting their '36 Washington Senators uniforms while the Padres will be sporting the jerseys their predecessors wore in the same period. Some sort of pin stripes we hear.

Saturday's game is the third in a four-game series between the teams with first pitch at 8:35 P.M. EST. The Nationals will complete their eleven game West Coast road trip Sunday against San Diego before having an off day on Monday.
