The Washington Nationals all but had the Chicago White Sox beat on Friday night. In the eighth-inning first baseman Michael Morse belted his 14th homerun of the season, a two run shot and shortstop Ian Desmond added a single in the ninth to give the Nationals a 3-0 lead going into the last frame of the game. Unfortunately the Nationals relief corps has been anything but and sent the game into extra innings before the Nationals finally pulled out a win in the 14th-inning by the score of 9-5.

Usually reliable closer Drew Storen gave up a one out, three-run homerun to Chicago's Mark Teahen to send the game into extras in the bottom of the ninth. In the tenth, outfielder Laynce Nix smashed his 10th dinger of the season, but the White Sox scored again in the bottom of the inning when reliever Todd Coffey walked in A.J. Pierzynski with the bases loaded. The Nationals scored again in the 12th-inning when Brian Bixler hit a RBI double, but again the White Sox answered with Pierzynski hitting a home run off Tyler Clippard.

The Nationals finally earned breathing room in the 14th-inning when Bixler hustled in over the plate after Ian Desmond reached on a throwing error. Center fielder Roger Bernadina followed that up with a RBI single and third baseman Ryan Zimmerman hit a two-run RBI double to give the Nats a four run cushion. Reliever Collin Balester was finally able to close out the game in the bottom of the 14th

The shaky bullpen ruined pitcher Jordan Zimmermann's 10th consecutive quality start where he went six-innings giving up no runs and just six hits while striking out four and walking one. The Nats used seven relievers in a game that ended at 1:09 A.M. EST.

The Nationals are now 39-37, third place in the NL East and riding a three game win streak.

Washington Nationals Interim Manager John McLaren is really getting a feel for his new, but temporary job. He has put the red hot Nationals on the verge of another win, handed his duties well and has also got ejected from his first game as interim manager after going ballistic on a reversed call.

In the eighth-inning with two outs the White Sox Paul Konerko was called out at first on a close play to end the inning. However another umpire reversed the call which then extended the inning and allowed Adam Dunn of the White Sox to have an at-bat with a man on and the score 2-0 Nationals. Shortstop Ian Desmond was given an error on the throw. An irate McLaren exited the dugout, screaming and cursing and was quickly ejected by the umpires as well as outfielder Jerry Hairston Jr. who also argued the call.

Adam Dunn eventually grounded out against reliever Sean Burnett and the score was preserved for the Nationals 2-0 going (finally) into the ninth.

Never a dull moment in Natstown these days.

Neither side is willing to give in the interleague battle between the Washington Nationals and Chicago White Sox. Both teams have fought to a 0-0 tie.

Nationals pitcher Jordan Zimmermann and Chicago pitcher Edwin Jackson have managed to keep the opposing team off the board. Both pitchers remain in the game as Zimmermann has given up no runs on five hits with three strikeouts and one walk while Jackson has gone the distance with Zimmermann but struck out eight. Former Nationals first baseman Adam Dunn is facing his old team for the first time since signing with the White Sox in the off season and the young Zimmermann has managed to make him go 0-for-3 with two strikeouts and a fly out. Center fielder Roger Bernadina made an incredible catch to rob Dunn of a home run in the sixth.

The Nationals and White Sox remain scoreless going into the bottom of the seventh-inning.

The character and mettle of the Washington Nationals will be tested Friday night as they take on the Chicago White Sox without an official manager. After manager Jim Riggleman resigned from the Washington organization on Thursday amid controversy the Nationals have put bench coach John McLaren in as interim manager for the weekend. Can the Nationals stay focused enough to keep their hot streak alive?

They certainly have the pitcher in line to do it. Stone-faced Jordan Zimmermann (5-6, 3.08 ERA)will step on the mound to face off against Edwin Jackson (4-6, 4.47 ERA) of the White Sox. Zimmermann has delivered a quality start in his past nine outings and held another AL team, the Baltimore Orioles, to two runs in 6 1/3 innings in interleague play his last start. The young hurler is the hottest pitcher in the rotation currently and a perfect go-to guy for a hot and streaking team.

McLaren has returned right fielder Jayson Werth to the lead-off spot while scrapping the previous Riggleman idea of batting Matt Stairs DH in American League ballparks. The Nationals will be playing with a DH Friday night and McLaren has turned to outfielder Laynce Nix to provide the power.

Nationals Line-Up

1. Jayson Werth, RF

2. Roger Bernadina, CF

3. Ryan Zimmerman, 3B
