MASN Sports writer Ben Goessling penned an interesting article on Wednesday about the likelihood - or rather, the unlikelihood - that an All-Star game will be played at Nationals Park any time in the years immediately following this one.

Since the game alternates between National League and American League stadiums each year, the midsummer classic won't return to an NL stadium until 2013, when it is widely believed that the Mets will host the game at Citi Field. The league might also deviate from that rotation for a year by allowing the Cubs to host the 2014 All Star Game to commemorate the 100-year anniversary of Wrigley Field. Goessling spells it out pretty well from there:

So that would probably mean either 2015 or 2016 is the Nationals' first chance at the All-Star Game. But they're going to have competition; the Marlins want to get the game at their new park, and there are a handful of NL cities that have been waiting longer than the Nationals for the game since opening their new parks (Cincinnati, Philadelphia and San Diego, though the last two cities had All-Star Games in their old parks in the 1990s).

All other ballparks aside, Nationals Park is unlikely to host the All Star Game until the neighborhoods surrounding it improve. That might take a while.

Sure, the nature of Tyler Clippard's win in the All-Star Game is a little bit surprising. He came on for one batter, allowed him to reach base, but was bailed out when Hunter Pence threw a dart to home plate. Because he was technically still in the game when Prince Fielder hit what would prove to be the go ahead three-run home run, he is credited with the win. While all that is noteworthy, perhaps the most surprising thing about it was that Tyler Clippard got a win at all.

Clippard has made 41 appearances for the Nats this year, but because he usually comes in the game in a hold situation to set up Drew Storen for a save. Which means that he doesn't usually have a chance to get a win. In fact, the win he earned in the All Star Game matches his entire total from the year to date. Not bad for one batter's work. Clippard was able to see the humor in getting the win.

"It was very ironic,'' Clippard said of getting a vulture win. "Last year was weird, and [Tuesday's All-Star Game] was more of the same. I haven't had this happen this year. Fortunately, I've been able to keep us in the lead when we've had it, but this was a little bit different situation. But it worked out.''

Clippard came into the All-Star game with a 1-0 record. He had the same mark in the game itself. No wonder it is so hard for a middle reliever to make the Midsummer Classic.

For the second straight year, a Washington Nationals reliever was the winning pitcher at the All-Star Game. One year after Matt Capps picked up the victory in 2010, Tyler Clippard earned the win in 2011, as the National League picked up their second straight victory in defeating the American League, 5-1.

Clippard faced just one batter, and actually gave up a hit. He came on to relieve Cliff Lee with two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning and surrendered a single to Adrian Beltre of the Texas Rangers. Luckily, left fielder Hunter Pence of the Houston Astros gunned out Jose Bautista trying to score from second base to end the inning. At the time, the AL led, 1-0.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, though, Prince Fielder of the Milwaukee Brewers hit a three-run home run to center field to give the NL a lead it wouldn't relinquish. Clippard was scheduled to be replaced by Clayton Kershaw of the Los Angeles Dodgers, but since he was technically the live pitcher, he earned the decision.

UPDATE: It's now official.

The 2011 MLB All-Star Game is continuing on, and Washington Nationals representative Tyler Clippard has already made a brief appearance. Clippard entered in the fourth inning to replace Cliff Lee with the NL trailing 1-0. He faced Adrian Beltre, who singled to left field on Clippard's third pitch of the at-bat. Luckily for Clippard, Hunter Prince gunned down Jose Bautista at the plate to end the inning. That was it for Clippard, who was in line to be replaced by Clayton Kershaw of the Dodgers.

Then, in the bottom of the inning, Prince Fielder mashed a home run to center field to give the NL a 3-1 lead. Suddenly, Clippard was in line to get the win. One batter, three pitches, and he could win?

Nationals fans should remember this scenario.

Why? It's exactly the same thing that happened with the team's lone representative in last year's All-Star Game. Matt Capps, who is now with Minnesota, entered in the bottom of the sixth inning with his team down 1-0 and in a jam. He struck out David Ortiz to get out of the inning in the only batter he faced. In the top of the seventh, Brian McCann hit a three-run double, and Capps got the win.

Will history repeat itself? We'll have to see, but so far, it looks like it will.

Washington Nationals reliever Tyler Clippard was honored and excited to be selected to the 2011 NL All-Star squad this year and he hoped to get in the game and make a difference. Clippard came into the game in the fourth inning with the NL All-Stars down 1-0, faced one batter to end his night and now, surprisingly is in line possibly to get the win for the National League.

After allowing a single to Adrian Beltre and then having Hunter Pence gun down Jose Bautista for the final out of the fourth, Clippard's night was finished. However in the top of the fifth Prince Fielder took C.J. Wilson yard for a three-run home run to give the NL a 3-1 lead. This puts Clippard in position to be the winning pitcher if the score holds up.

Clippard is the lone National to be selected to be in the All-Star game in Arizona. He threw only three pitches, but it was enough to possibly put his mark on the game. In 2010 the Nationals All-Star representative Matt Capps earned the win for the NL squad and if Tuesday's score stands it will be the second consecutive year a National pitcher wins an All-Star game.

The 2011 All-Star Game is underway with the AL leading the NL 1-0 and the Washington Nationals lone all-star, Tyler Clippard, came to the mound in the fourth inning.

Clippard is inherited a two men on, two out situation from Philadelphia Phillies starter Cliff Lee. Lee gave up a solo home run to Boston Red Sox all-star Adrian Gonzalez. He then gave up back-to-back singles to Jose Bautista and Josh Hamilton to bring bring in Clippard who was wearing the Nationals home white uniform and blue-bottomed cleats.

After his warm up pitches, Clippard then had Adrian Beltre to contend with. Clippard threw three pitches: all four-seam fastballs, two registering 92 MPH and one at 93 MPH. Beltre unloaded on Clippard's third pitch for a single with Bautista heading home for another run. However Hunter Pence gunned down Bautista at the plate to end the inning.

Clippard was the last non-starter introduced during player introductions and got a modest reception.

When Tyler Clippard was a highly ranked prospect in the Yankee's organization, he was a starting pitcher. When he was traded to the Washington Nationals and then asked to come out of the bullpen two years later, he didn't take it very well at first. But then Clippard committed to his new position, and has played well enough this year to be named to the 2011 MLB All-Star Team.

Based on his comments in an article from Bill Ladson about his feelings about the position now, it seems like he is pretty comfortable with his role on the staff.

"With all the great arms that we have in the Nationals' organization coming up, and the guys that are throwing now, my role is exactly where it needs to be to help this club win a championship," Clippard said. "So I'm content with that. I think I could start again. Is it going to happen? Probably not. I'm in a role that I'm very comfortable in and I'm having a lot of success. If it's not broke, don't fix it."

Clippard has great stuff, and the perfect demeanor of a setup man. His unique delivery also throws teams off track, and they have a hard time getting used to it in his limited exposure. It took great insight on the Nationals part to recognize that Clippard had the tools to succeed in the bullpen, and god patience and understanding from Clippard to accept his role. It seems to have worked out for everyone.
