As NFL Cut Day 2011 came and went, three former Maryland Terrapins, perhaps long shots to make rosters when training camp began, ended up members of their respective team's official 53-man roster.

The Seattle Seahawks kept former Terp and California University (Pennsylvania) quarterback Josh Portis, and it appears Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll will look to utilize Portis in various ways, not just as a clipboard-holding emergency QB. Seattle knew Portis played well enough in the preseason they could not sneak him on to their practice squad if he was released.

Just up the Baltimore-Washington Parkway, former Maryland wideout LaQuan Williams made the Ravens roster. Williams, an undrafted free agent like Portis, caught four balls in the preseason for 84 yards, but it was his return skills that most likely secured his spot on the final roster. The ex-Terp average 35.5 yards on two punt returns and 30.5 yards on two kickoff returns.

Perhaps the most impressive performance by a former Maryland player in training camp was that of Giants running back Da'Rel Scott, a seventh round selection. The speedster had both a 97-yard and 65-yard touchdown in exhibition play, and his explosive running style made it impossible for New York to cut him for fear of losing him to another team.

The University of Maryland continues to feed players into the NFL through the undrafted free agent signing process. Former Terp wide receiver Adrian Cannon is the latest, and he has signed on with the San Diego Chargers. For more on Cannon, we turn to Patrick Stevens of the Washington Times.

Cannon caught 86 passes for 935 yards and six touchdowns in 45 games at Maryland. He made 23 starts, all but one in his final two seasons. He had 36 receptions for 324 yards as a senior. He joins Travis Baltz (Indianapolis), Adrian Moten (Indianapolis), LaQuan Williams (Baltimore), Alex Wujciak (Cleveland) and Will Yeatman (New England) as former Terrapins inking free agent deals this week.

Cannon probably has a long way to go before he can make the Chargers everyday roster, but he is a competitor and he should at least be able to contribute to the practice squad. For more on the Terps, head over to Testudo Times.

The Redskins keep adding to the list of their undrafted free agent rookie pool, as they have now apparently signed South Florida tight end Kevin Gidrey.

This according to Rick Maese of the Washington Post, who noted Gidrey's twitter declaration:

Baltz handled the kicking and punting duties last season after spending most of his time as the team's punter. The Colts have Adam Vinatieri as their kicker, but he is getting up there in years. They also have Michigan State kicker Brett Swenson on the roster. Pat McAfee is their punter.

It remains unclear what position Portis will play for Seattle at this time, since his skills would make him suited for several different spots.

Portis came to Maryland as a highly-touted quarterback prospect, but never got on the field much. In 2007, he was caught cheating on the exam and was suspended for the season. After one year as a backup, he transferred to Division II California University of Pennsylvania.

Yeatman was a two sport athlete in college, playing tight end for both Notre Dame and Maryland on the football field, and then playing attack and midfield on the lacrosse field in the spring. He was named the LaxPower Rookie of the Year in 2007 for his work on the lacrosse field, leading Notre Dame with 46 points and 25 assists. He sat out the 2008 season in order to transfer to Maryland, a stronger lacrosse program than Notre Dame.
