ASHBURN - After being unavailable to the media on Monday, Redskins quarterback Rex Grossman spoke to reporters on Wednesday for the first time since being named the starter.

Grossman won what was a "close" competition according to head coach Mike Shanahan. Most believed Grossman's counterpart, fifth year man John Beck, would get the nod come Week 1 against the Giants, but Shanahan went with who he thought had the better preseason with Grossman.

Not surprisingly, Grossman expressed his confidence in ability to win the job.

"Throughout this whole thing I wanted to play well, and have no regrets about my play." he said. "My confidence would waiver a little bit every once in a while, and [I] wasn’t real sure what they were going to do [with the decision], but I wanted to play well, and I felt real good about how well I played in the preseason games and in practice."

One issue that was evident during the competition was how "fair" the competition was. Experts and pundits believed that Shanahan wanted Beck to win the job, and would give him every opportunity to win it. However, Grossman still won out, and believed Shanahan was fair during the entire process.

"There's been times in the past," he recalled. "Where you can't quite trust what [the coaching staff] were actually saying. But I have a pretty good relationship with Kyle [Shanahan] and Mike's a stand-up guy, so I took them at their word, and I trusted it. "

This Sunday's start will be Grossman's first Week 1 start since the 2007 season, completing what has been a long road back to being a fulltime starter, which is what he was with the Chicago Bears.

"I didn't take [the starting job] for granted, in Chicago," Grossman said."But anytime something gets taken away from you, and you get it back, you have a different outlook [and] a different type of approach and respect to the position you're in."

Indeed, this represents a second chance for Grossman, who has been ridiculed for his inconsistent style of play so far in his career. But with Washington, he sees a new opportunity to prove his doubters wrong, and help the Redskins in the process.

"To be the starting quarterback of the Washington Redskins is a huge thing," the ninth year pro said. "I fully understand it, and it’s my goal to take it and run with it. It’s a very exciting time for me, and I feel great about it."

It has to be comforting to the players to now know who their starting quarterback is. It gives them a chance to build an on-field and off-field rapport with their signal caller, and finally puts to bed any notion of a 'quarterback controversy'. For now, it's a done deal and the team can head into Week 1 of the season knowing who their guy is.

ASHBURN - After practice Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan addressed reporters for the first time since making a decision on his Week 1 starting quarterback.

Here's a transcript of what followed:

The announcement of QB: “I had a chance to talk to our quarterbacks over the weekend. I talked to both John and Rex. [It was] a very good battle. Like I’ve said all along, I’ve got a lot of faith in both of them. It’s been very competitive all the way through. I wanted to announce it today that starting quarterback will be, obviously, Rex. The rumors are right”

On what went into the decision: “[It was] Day by day. Practice everyday, game situations. Just watching [both of them], how they perform in all different areas. It was close. Very competitive. As I’ve said, I’ve got a lot of confidence in both guys after watching them through this camp.”

On why he chose to announce it on Monday: “I just thought it was the best thing. If we knew what direction we were going to go, [we wanted] to let everybody know and let everybody know [as soon as possible] so on Wednesday we can focus on the Giants and not all the speculation that goes on in between. I wanted to take as long as I possibly could to make sure that I did make the right decision. But [it] was very competitive, and I like where we’re at.”

On Rex’s preseason: ”Like I said, you’re looking at him everyday. Everything he does. It’s a big evaluation process. [We look at] 7-on-7 [drills], check-offs, audibles, blitzes. All in all, I thought he did a great job. I thought John did too. But I thought Rex won by an inch.”

On Rex having regular season snaps in this offense: “First of all, it’s always nice to get some snaps. familiar with the system. I thought he was pretty automatic with a lot of his reads. Hopefully he plays accordingly.”

On if there was something John Beck didn’t show him: “John did a great job, too. [It] was very close.”

On how much past experience helped Rex: " I’ve said from day one, anytime you’ve got confidence in two quarterbacks, it’s pretty good in the National Football League, and that’s what I have right now. It’s going to be fun. It’s going to be fun now that we can get going and we got two quarterbacks that we got a lot of confidence in, and hopefully they play accordingly”

On if he will re-evaluate the QB position after the Giants game: “We evaluate every position. That’s the nature of this game. You’ve got to be at the top of your game to stay at any position. I know that everybody wants to make the quarterback controversy and [say] ‘How long will he be here?’, just like any position. It’s the nature of the game. You’ve got to perform [even] if you’re a Pro Bowl player, or you’re coming in as a first round draft choice, [or] a third round draft choice. We’re going to evaluate you everyday. And I told [the two quarterbacks] from the start, I said ‘I have no idea what direction we’re going to go. Whoever plays the best is going to start’”

On if Rex Grossman is the starter for the entire season: “Obviously you make your decision based for the season.”

On if it is Rex Grossman’s job to lose: “Of course it is. When you pick a guy out, you don’t say ‘Hey, do you think this guy is going to fail?’. Obviously you’re hoping he’d be very successful.”

On John Beck’s reaction to the decision: “I think the same way Rex would [have]. These guys are very competitive. Whichever way we went, obviously the other guy would be disappointed. But they’re going to support their teammates. He’s one play away from being the starter. I’ve got a lot of confidence in him. ”

Rex Grossman will soon be named the Washington Redskins' starting quarterback for Week 1 against the New York Giants, according to a report by Jason La Canfora of NFL Network. It remains unclear exactly why Redskins coach Mike Shanahan has picked Grossman instead of John Beck, who he has been high on all winter, but one reason is their preseason performance.

Both quarterbacks certainly had their moments, but Grossman seemed to get the better of Beck after looking at the numbers. Grossman completed 34 of 53 passes for 407 yards, two touchdowns, one interception and a 92.3 quarterback rating, while Beck was 30 of 48 for 356 yards, one touchdown, two interceptions and a 74.7 rating. By the numbers, that makes Grossman the clear winner.

In other words, Grossman's preseason probably won him the job. Nevertheless, some were calling for Grossman before the preseason began, including SB Nation's Redskins blog Hogs Haven.

It appears the answer to the Redskins' quarterback quandary has been solved, for now. According to a report, Rex Grossman will be the Week 1 starter against the Giants.

All summer, Redskins fans have pondered the answer to the team's biggest question - who's going to the be the Week 1 starting quarterback? It appears the answer to that mystery has now been revealed. According to NFL Network's Jason La Canfora, the Redskins have decided to go with nine-year veteran Rex Grossman.

The move itself is not a surprise, as Grossman started the team's third preseason game - considered by most to be the dress rehearsal - against the Baltimore Ravens. He was then rested in the preseason finale against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, which seemed to suggest that he was considered the starter all along.

What is a surprise is the fact that Shanahan's decision has come out this early in the week. It was expected by many that news of the team's starter would come out Wednesday, at the earliest. But instead it has been leaked during the team's early preparations for the New York Giants.

Grossman finished the preseason with 64 percent completion percentage, threw for two touchdowns and one interception, with a 92.3 quarterback rating.

Shanahan is set to talk with reporters in the afternoon.
