Charlie Davies earned MLS Player of the Week honors for the first time after scoring a hat trick in D.C. United's 3-0 win over Chivas USA

Charlie Davies' hat trick Saturday night against Chivas USA saw the New Hampshire native named MLS Player of the Week for the first time in his career. Davies received 12 of the 18 first-choice votes cast by members of the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) after scoring all three United goals in the 3-0 win, which saw the Black-and-Red ascend into the last MLS wild-card playoff spot with at least one game in hand on all their fellow contenders.

United winger Chris Pontius, who assisted on all three Davies goals, received four first-choice votes. Unfortunately for Pontius and United, the 24-year-old will likely miss the rest of this season after suffering a broken fibula in a second-half challenge with David Junior Lopes. Lopes was sent off for the tackle, but the damage was done. Sebastien Le Toux of the Philadelphia Union and Teal Bunbury of Sporting Kansas City split the other two first-place votes.

The match against Chivas was Davies' first start since August 18 against Chicago and the first time he had gone the full 90 minutes since August 13 against Vancouver. The three goals brought Davies' total to 11 for the season to go with one assist in 20 appearances, 14 starts and 1,266 minutes.

The voting for this week's award by NASR took into account games between August 29 and September 11 due to the relative lack of league games played between August 29 and September 4.

Charlie Davies and Chris Pontius combined for three goals on the road, but one of them might have to miss significant time due to an injury late in the game.

D.C. United needed a big performance on the road against Chivas USA to move up in the MLS playoff race, and they got it tonight in Los Angeles. Unfortunately for United though, they may have lost one of their stars in the process.

D.C. got off to a flying start with two goals from striker Charlie Davies in the first 14 minutes. The first goal was set up by midfielder Dwayne De Rosario, who linked up with Chris Pontius on the wing. Pontius, making a start at forward in place of the injured Josh Wolff, found a sliding Davies to give United a 1-0 lead. Pontius and Davies hooked up again for the second goal, as Pontius took advantage of a failed Chivas clearance and unselfishly passed up his own shot to feed a wide open Davies for the striker's second of the match.

The pair wasn't done. Pontius set up Davies again in the second half on a counterattack for his third goal of the game and 11th of the season.

Pontius' night would not end on that high note though. The forward collided with Chivas defender David Junior Lopes and had to be carted off the field with an evidently painful leg injury. He will undergo x-rays to determine the extent of the injury.

United moved into playoff position with the road win. They return to action with a visit to the Seattle Sounders on Saturday Sep. 17 before facing Chivas USA once again at home on Wednesday Sep. 21.

With just 10 games left in the MLS seasons and a battle at the bottom of the playoff race, D.C. United will try to grab some points from Chivas USA tonight on Comcast SportsNet.

Hurricane Irene and international absences placed an unexpected and perhaps unwanted 20-day break in the MLS schedule for D.C. United. The team returns to action tonight though against Chivas USA at Home Depot Center in Los Angeles. The game kicks off at 10:30 PM and will be broadcast locally on Comcast SportsNet.

Although the two teams play on opposite coasts, the new MLS playoff format pits United and Chivas in a battle for the final spots in the playoffs. They are tied at 31 points, and face each other twice in the next two weeks, with the teams meeting again at RFK Stadium on September 21st.

United will welcome the return of Bill Hamid to the starting lineup. The 20-year old goalkeeper suffered an injury just before halftime of United's 1-1 draw with the Chicago Fire, and was forced to miss the ensuing loss to Sporting Kansas City before getting called up to the U.S. National Team for a pair of matches in support of Tim Howard. Dwayne de Rosario, Charlie Davies, Andy Najar, and Chris Pontius will all be set to start for United and run the attack, while Ethan White will likely fill in for Dejan Jakovic in central defense.
