The major story from the Washington Capitals' 3-2 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday night centered around the fight between Pittsburgh's Arron Asham and Washington's Jay Beagle. Asham dropped a bloodied Beagle to the ice with one punch, then celebrated afterwards as Beagle was being treated. However, the NHL has decided not to discipline Asham for his actions, according to a report by Stephen Whyno of the Washington Times.

"While nobody liked the gestures, they simply did not violate the rules as currently written (Rule 75.2 (i) which calls for a minor penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct for "any identifiable player who uses obscene, profane or abusive language or gestures directed at any person," NHL spokesman John Dellapina said in an email response.

Asham was apologetic after the game, calling his own actions "claseless." Perhaps that played a role in the NHL's decision.

Washington Capitals defensemen Karl Alzner is known for being a fun-loving, goofy guy, so he's not the kind of person who calls out people left and right.
Washington Capitals forward Jay Beagle did not return to the team's 3-2 overtime win over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday night after getting knocked out by Arron Asham in a fight early in the third period. The two men dropped the gloves after Beague was penalized, and Asham's punch caused Beague to bleed profusely. Here's the fight video. Afterwards, Beagle was spotted with ice in his mouth, according to Stephen Whyno of the Washington Times.

It remains unclear how seriously Beague is injured beyond this game. What is clear is that the Washington Capitals did not take too kindly to Asham's gestures after the fight. According to Corey Masisak of NHL.com, Alex Ovechkin, who served the penalty for Beagle, had some words for Asham.

In a rivalry game, there should be no shortage of blood, sweat and tears. The first two were definitely there on the ice, but in the stands, the Pittsburgh faithful left saddened as the Washington Capitals defeated the Penguins 3-2 in overtime

Dennis Wideman's wrist shot off of Nicklas Backstrom's cross-ice pass beat Brent Johnson on the Caps' first and only power play of the night.

Mike Knuble and Alex Ovechkin also scored for Washington. Knuble's goal tied the game at 1-1 early in the second period, while Ovechkin's goal gave them a 2-1 lead early in the third period. Ovechkin's goal came via deflection when he tipped Mike Green's turnaround slap shot over Johnson's glove hand and right under the left side of the crossbar. The referee initially ruled it a no-goal, but upon review, it was overturned and the Caps took a 2-1 lead at 40 seconds.

James Neal scored twice for the Penguins, including the game-tying goal on the power play with 3:45 remaining. The Penguins finished 1-for-5 with the man advantage. Tomas Vokoun overcame his rocky debut Monday by making 39 saves. Despite being outshot 41-19, the Caps still found a way to win.

A scary moment took place in the third period when Jay Beagle fought Arron Asham. After committing a roughing penalty on Kris Letang, Beagle and Asham squared off with Beagle taking two shots to the face that sent him down to the ice while bleeding profusely. He did not return.

With a 3-0-0 record to start the season, the Caps head back home Saturday to face the Ottawa Senators at Verizon Center.

Warning: this video is not for the faint of heart. This is Washington Capitals forward Jay Beagle trying to make a name for himself against Pittsburgh Penguins bruiser Arron Asham and failing miserably. Beagle got a couple punches in, but then Asham dropped the hammer with one huge punch.

The initial video below only shows the fight itself, but the worst part was when the CSN Washington camera (UPDATE: that video is below the jump) showed Beagle bleeding like crazy on the ice. It remains unclear whether the punch or Beagle's visor caused the bleeding, but either way, it was not a pretty sight.

The fight originally happened when Beagle took a penalty on Kris Letang. Asham came over to fight Beagle, and Beagle really had no choice. Video (via @TPBDerek), plus Asham's taunting afterwards, is below the jump.

Call Mike Knuble "The Penguins Killer."

Knuble's goal at the start of the second period brought the Washington Capitals back to a 1-1 tie with the Pittsburgh Penguins and the score remains the same after 40 minutes.

Knuble tied the game at 1:20 without even shooting the puck. Knuble corralled the puck low in the offensive zone and drove towards Brent Johnson. Deryk Engelland pushed Knuble off of the puck and into the side of the net, but the loose puck somehow squirted through Johnson's pads and into the net. It was Knuble's first goal of the season and his 31st career goal against the Penguins, the most against any team in his career.

Shots are 21-14 in favor of Pittsburgh, but Washington outshot them 11-9 in the period. The game opened up considerably as both teams had several great scoring chances. Tomas Vokoun has 20 saves, while Johnson has 13 of his own.
