A few days have passed, and Washington Redskins tight end Fred Davis is still being too hard on himself. When Rex Grossman got benched in the Redskins' 20-13 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, Davis blamed himself for two of Grossman's four interceptions. Now that Grossman has been replaced by John Beck as the team's starting quarterback, Davis is still blaming himself.

Via Rich Campbell of the Washington Times:

Right or wrong, Davis has got to stop looking backwards. If those interceptions don't happen, sure, maybe Grossman isn't benched on Sunday, but it was only a matter of time. We know Grossman is a turnover machine, and whether that came back to bite him in Week 6, 7, 8, 9 or later, it was going to come back to bite him.

Fred, there's nothing you can do about Mike Shanahan's decision now. Just go out there and continue to play hard and well.

This week, we explain why the decision to bench Rex Grossman had to made quick hook or not, how the defense is getting it done and why Redskins fans should not be cheering Donovan McNabb's latest setback.

Well then. That was another swing and miss in year two of the Mike Shanahan regime with the Washington Redskins when it comes to the most important position on the field: quarterback. First, he missed big with Donovan McNabb, and now -- shocker -- Rex Grossman turns it over too much to be trusted. His four interceptions against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday was just the icing on the cake. Now, the coach is handing the reins over to a guy that has not started a game since 2007 in John Beck.

Raise your hand if you are surprised it came to this before the midway point of the season. Rex put your hand down. I even mentioned last week in this column that I was shocked it did not happen yet.

Raise your hand if you thought in mid-October that Rex Grossman would still be the Redskins' starter and [Danny O'Brien] might be on the bench.

OK, sure, Deion Sanders must be stunned. Shockingly, there is at least one high profile person defending Rex besides Rex here in D.C. Former Redskins QB Joe Theismann went to the DC airwaves to defend Rex, as the D.C. Sports Bog points out.

"I just don't agree with the decision to start John Beck," Theismann told Mike Wise and Danny Rouhier on 106.7 The Fan. "I thought he did a good job making plays last week against Philadelphia, but when you sit down and study the interceptions that Rex threw - this sounds like a quarterback talking, I know - not all of them were his fault...andI just think that this is a little bit of a quick hook, to be perfectly honest with you."

By the way, Beck will be the 26th quarterback to start for the Redskins since Theismann's leg was shattered on Monday Night Football almost 25 years ago.

In this week's edition of Chain Reactions, we explain why the decision to bench Rex had to be made, how the Redskins' defense is dominating, why Redskins fans should not be cheering McNabb's latest setback and a transaction that makes you wonder if Vinny Cerrato is back in the NFL.

Time for Beck Bandwagon

The time is right for John Beck to become the starter. It is a moment that everyone predicted in the preseason. Remember the "John Grossman" and "Rex Beck," or "Beckman" talk in August? Don't forget: Beck is the guy most thought Mike Shanahan wanted to start in the offseason and Kyle Shanahan "stood on a chair for" in Houston. So let's find out about Beck before the offseason. Can it be worse than Grossman? Either way, the safe money is the Redskins' quarterback of the future is still playing on Saturdays right now.

The Redskins need a quarterback to make the most of each and every possession, not give the opponent a short field or give up a chance at points. They also probably need someone with mobility like Beck thanks to the offensive line injuries. This offense is not loaded with playmakers and will never be mistaken for the Packers, Patriots or Saints. The guy under center has to be real careful with the football, and that is not something Rex has ever excelled at in his career.

"There's always going to be mistakes made in the game, but you can't constantly turn the football over," Shanahan said. "And if you do, you're going to lose your opportunity to lead the football team."

Lets be clear: despite the Redskins' 3-2 record, Grossman was regressing from his week one opener against the Giants. You have to believe the Shanahans were concerned even before Sunday's 4 pick performance. Rex has been spinning "turnovers happen for a reason," and are not always just the quarterback. Fine, but whatever the reason, it seems to find him his entire career. He also ranked only in front of Kerry Collins in quarterback rating. Amazing the Redskins are a game above .500.

I expect Beck to do well Sunday at Carolina. The Panthers have the worst defense in the NFL. Look for him to tuck and run at the first time of trouble rather than throwing into coverage.

Defense is Doing their Job

Certainly, five games does not make a season -- remember the Redskins were 3-2 at this point last season. However, there is no denying the Jim Haslett's 3-4 defense has undergone an Extreme Makeover: NFL Defense Edition. I know coaches preach that you win and lose as a team. Sure, that's nice, but let's be real here: the defense had no hand in either losses.

They kept Dallas out of the end zone on their home field in the Monday Night Football loss. On Sunday, despite an offense that could not stay on the field, they kept the Eagles to 20 points and shut them out in the second half. The Skins defense currently ranks third in the most important statistic points allowed (16.6 points per game). Only the Ravens and 49ers are better.

The only criticism you can have of them is they can't cover botched shotgun snaps very well. If the Panthers did their homework, they will at least call for 4-5 bad snaps on Sunday. I know there must be a weakness in the numbers right? Well they are sixth overall in total defense, ninth against the pass, 11th against the run and second in stopping teams on third downs. Let's hope the injury bug avoids this unit.

McNabb's Benching is Redskins' Loss Too

I was a little miffed to see the celebration on twitter from many Redskin fans over Donovan McNabb's struggles in Minnesota. Many think it validates Mike Shanahan's decision to send him packing. I kind of understand, but Shanahan also gave up two picks to get the guy here from Philadelphia. Also, it should be pointed out that the guy he felt could replace him has been benched. Shanahan has a 0-2 count on him in finding his signal caller.

More importantly with the benching is that it seems highly unlikely the Redskins will get more out of the deal than a sixth-round pick in 2012. The 2013 pick was conditional sixth rounder and the guess here is the condition had nothing to do with him being benched in Week 7. For those scoring at home, it was a second rounder -- the 37th overall pick in 2010 (Nate Allen) -- and a fourth-rounder (104th overall) this past April that the Eagles traded to Tampa Bay and then took tight en Luke Stocker. So to make a long story short: they lost in that deal, and that is nothing to cheer about.

Evidence the New Boss is Not the Same as the Old Boss

The Carson Palmer trade to the Oakland Raiders was a steal by the Cincinnati Bengals, as they got a first-rounder and either be a first- or second-rounder in 2013. It is a deal that cannot be blamed on Al Davis. So there is only one conclusion: Vinny Cerrato is running the show in Oakland. OK, too easy I know.

However, let us not forget Vinny wanted to give up two first-round picks for Chad Ochocinco when he was still Chad Johnson. You could also argue that if Vinny was still running the show here, the Palmer trade was a move the Redskins would have made with their desperate quarterback situation.

Of course, you could argue the new regime of Bruce Allen and Mike Shanahan had their Vinny moment last year in the McNabb deal. However, giving up a second and fourth is not like giving up the freight the Raiders just gave up for a guy that is not likely to make them Super. I'm glad it was not the Redskins that got burned by the Bengals of all teams.

ASHBURN - The topic du jour around Redskins Park Wednesday was predictably the announcement of a quarterback change, one that saw incumbent starter Rex Grossman lose his job to backup John Beck. Many Redskins players chimed in on the decision, from receivers to running backs to the two passers themselves, but the man who ultimately made the decision, head coach Mike Shanahan spoke at length Wednesday about his decision to go with Beck.

Shanahan removed Grossman in the fourth quarter of Sunday's game against the Eagles in favor of Beck, who Shanahan believed performed admirably given the situation.

“No. 1, I thought John did a good job with three of our [offensive] starters out in the fourth quarter against Philadelphia," Shanahn said of Beck's performance Sunday. "To come in a situation when they knew we had to throw the football — he had nine first downs. ... He impressed with that. [We] put a lot of pressure on him in that situation."

But Shanahan's decision did not come from Beck's performance against the Eagles alone. It came after weeks of solid practice from Beck, not to mention Grossman's penchant for turning the football over, doing so 11 times in five games.

"I like the way [Beck] has been practicing the last few weeks. He’s done a good job in practice and I think he deserves the opportunity for us to see what he can do.”

Grossman beat out Beck for the starting job at the conclusion of training camp, which means Beck has been getting scout team reps the last six weeks. But despite that, Shananan seems to feel as though Beck has come along in the last month and a half to warrant a change.

“Well, I think right now that he’s more comfortable with the system," Shanahan said. "He was out for that week [in training camp] . Like I said, I like the way he’s practiced. Rex didn’t quite have the same practices as he did earlier – as I spoke to Rex. It’s a constant evaluation and you have to go with your gut."

One of the issues Beck will have to deal with moving forward is working with a re-shuffled offensive line, one that has been bit by the injury bug with injuries to guard Kory Lichtensteiger (knee) and tackle Trent Williams (high ankle sprain). Because of those issues, Beck's mobility looks to be an asset with a group up front that could struggle in the next few weeks.

"I think a big plus for John is his mobility," said Shanahan. "He’s a 4.7 [40-yard dash] guy. He can make plays with his feet [and] he has a good command for the offense."

As for Grossman, Shanahan informed his now backup quarterback of the decision earlier in the week, highlighting the importance of securing the football.

"That’s what I talked to Rex about. I said, ‘hey, to keep that position, quarterback in the NFL, you have to eliminate those mistakes'," said Shanahan of his meeting with Grossman. "You can’t constantly turn the football over. If you do, you’re going to lose your opportunity to lead the football team."

But the biggest issue moving forward for Shanahan and the Redskins seems to be the fact that the team has yet to find a starting caliber quarterback in his tenure in Washington. With Beck, the team will turn to its third starting quarterback in less than two seasons.

Despite that, when Shanahan was asked if he believes the 30 year old Beck could be the answer at the position for the present and the future, his answer was pretty simple.

"I don't think there's any question about it."

ASHBURN - John Beck spoke to reporters Wednesday for the first time since being named the starting quarterback of the Washington Redskins. Beck replaced incumbent quarterback in Rex Grossman Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles after Grossman threw four interception in three quarters.

Though Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan informed his entire team Wednesday morning of his decision to go with Beck at quarterback over Grossman, he informed each quarterback on Tuesday of their fate.

"[Shanahan] just brought me in [his office] and said 'We're going to give you an opportunity to play this week,' " Beck said. "[He said] just go out there and play your game."

Beck's start Sunday against the Carolina Panthers will be just the fifth of his career and his first since his rookie season of 2007 while with the Miami Dolphins.

"I'm definitely excited," he said of his opportunity. "There's been a lot of hard work that's gone into this and you never know when your opportunity is going to come so you always have to stay ready."

Beck was in the running to earn the starting job out of training camp, but was beaten by Grossman in a close competition. The Redskins new starter believes that the last six weeks of practice have prepared him for the opportunity to perform well moving forward.

"It's been good to be able to be in the [backup quarterback] position this year," he said. "Last year I was only in that position for a couple games at the very end of the season [while] still learning the offense."

Beck was no doubt brought in to provide a spark to the offense and be able to show the ability to protect the football, something Grossman struggled with.

"Ball security is a point every single week," Beck said. "It's very hard to win in the NFL if you turn the all over. Now it's on my shoulders to take care of the football and put our team in the est position to win."

Now that the decision has been made to switch starters, it's unclear as to how long Beck will have to establish himself. Most have speculated that should Beck struggle, Shanahan could choose to go back to Grossman.

"I don't know because [me and Shanahan] haven't had that conversation," he said of his status as the starter. "I can't really think about that because if I try to think of it as 'Oh, I have to do everything right now,' that can be putting too much pressure on yourself."

Shanahan will address the media after Wednesday's practice to discuss the reasons behind Grossman's benching and what Beck will bring to the offense, and for how long this change could last.

But as far as Beck goes, the fifth year man our of BYU realizes that his opportunity is right here, right now.

"You just have to play," he said. "Just play football."

ASHBURN - Rex Grossman spoke to the media for the first time Wednesday since the announcement of his benching in favor of John Beck.

Grossman was removed in the fourth quarter of Sunday's game against the Philadelphia Eagles after throwing four interceptions in just three quarters. After the game, it was clear Mike Shanahan was pondering a quarterback change. That proved to be true as the head coach addressed the team Wednesday morning, informing them that Beck will indeed be the starter going forward.

"I was frustrated [when I found out]," Grossman said. "Not completely surprised, but disappointed that I wasn't able to come back off [the Eagles game]."

Though the Eagles game was by far Grossman's worst, he was struggling to lead the offense in his three prior games against Arizona, Dallas and St. Louis. In five starts this season, Grossman has tallied 11 turnovers in all.

"The frustrating part about it is that I do think that [the four prior games] were good performances," Grossman said. " "They should have been great."

"Whatever you want to say about turnovers," he continued. "There's always a reason, but ultimately I'm responsible for the ball."

Washington's quarterback quandary in 2011 has been one most observers believed would happen. With Grossman now being benched in favor of Beck, there's no assurance his replacement will be able to keep his job either, leaving room for a possible return for Grossman.

"If I do get back in there, I'm going to feel real good about it, and feel real good where I'm at. I'll just try to get better on the things I did well. Having success and winning games will propel my confidence if I do get back in there," Grossman said.

Joe Theismann tends to be the kind of guy that is fully on board with whatever the Washington Redskins are doing, which is why it was a mild surprise to see him publicly disagree with Mike Shanahan's decision to name John Beck as the starting quarterback for next week's game. He expressed this disagreement on "The Mike Wise Show" on 106.7 The Fan on Wednesday (via Dan Steinberg):

Theismann later said "this is a little bit of a quick hook, to be perfectly honest with you." Theismann is obviously forgetting that Grossman has 11 turnovers in his last four games.

Then, Jason La Canfora of NFL Network did the same and added the following nugget.

Mike Shanahan notified his QBs early this morning that John Beck is the new starter. Did not tell his staff or any players til this AM. Many Skins players and coaches expected the move to Beck. Not a surprise.

That's interesting, especially in light of Santana Moss' recent comments backing Grossman. On Monday, Moss said the Redskins "can't just give up on [Grossman] after one game." It'll be interesting to see his reaction on Wednesday when the media talks to the players.

The Washington Redskins will be making a change at quarterback when they square off with the Carolina Panthers on Sunday. John Beck will be named the team's starter, replacing Rex Grossman, according to a report by ESPN's Adam Schefter. An announcement from coach Mike Shanahan is expected later Wednesday.

The move comes after Grossman was benched in the Redskins' 20-13 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday. Grossman threw four interceptions, including three to the same player, and was replaced at the beginning of the fourth quarter. Beck was inserted into the game and led the Redskins on a scoring drive, but it was not enough to complete the comeback.

The two quarterbacks battled in the preseason, with Shanahan selecting Grossman then. Despite a 3-2 record, Grossman has been erratic and turnover-prone, which prompted the change.
