Something seems a little weird about making a statement in October, but that's probably the best phrase to use when describing the Washington Capitals' victory over the Detroit Red Wings. Two days after demolishing the Philadelphia Flyers, 5-2, the Capitals did one better against the lone other undefeated team in the NHL. Mike Green had two goals and two assists and Mathieu Perreault added two goals of his own as the Capitals routed Detroit, 7-1.

The Capitals struck first with two goals within 61 seconds in the first period. First, Green scored on a power-play goal, then Marcus Johansson converted on a Red Wings turnover. The Capitals added another goal early in the second period, a goal in the closing seconds of the second period and three more in the third period. Detroit actually outshot the Capitals, but could not make the most of their opportunities as Tomas Vokoun was outstanding.

At 7-0-0, the Capitals are now the lone remaining undefeated team, having topped one of their top challengers in the East and the best team thus far in the West in successive games. The Red Wings were tired from playing on Friday and played their backup goalie, but this was still quite a statement from the Capitals.

The Detroit Red Wings appeared to regroup in the second period, scoring their first goal of the game to cut the Washington Capitals lead to 3-1 and generally dominating play for much of the period. However, Washington's fourth line came up huge with a Mathieu Perreault goal with just 7.6 second left in the frame, and now the hometown Capitals have a three goal lead entering the final period, appearing to take some of the wind out of Detroit's sails with the late period tally.

The Capitals went up 3-0 on Mike Green's second power play goal of the game five minutes into the second stanza, but played sloppy for much of the period, drawing four penalties and having to fend off a 5-on-3 power play for the Red Wings, before the Perreault goal bailed them out.

Tomas Vokoun has impressed again between the pipes, stopping 25 of the 26 shots he has faced.

The last two undefeated teams in the NHL will square off Saturday evening at the Verizon Center when the Washington Capitals take on the Detroit Red Wings. The Capitals are looking to become just the 10th team in NHL history to win its first seven games of the season. Here is what you need to know about the game:

Who: Washington Capitals (6-0-0, 12 points) vs. Detroit Red Wings (5-0-0, 10 points)

Where: Verizon Center, Washington D.C.

When: 7 p.m.

TV Information: Locally, the game will be broadcast on Comcast Sports Net, with Joe Beninati and Craig Laughlin. The game is also available on the NHL Network.

Radio: Capitals Radio 1500.

Notable developments: Since looking a bit shaky to begin the season, goaltender Tomas Vokoun has allowed just five goals in his last 247 minutes of work, stopping 137 of the last 142 shots he has faced. The Red Wings' last visit to Verizon Center in 2010 ended in a 3-2 loss to the Capitals, and Detroit has not won in D.C. since 2005.

Which team will take control of the young NHL season? Both are undefeated, only one will emerge unscathed. The Capitals stand at 6-0-0 while the Red Wings sport a 5-0-0 record.

The Washington Capitals will host the Detroit Red Wings Saturday night to determine which team can stay undefeated among the two. Washington sports a 6-0-0 record after putting away Philadelphia on Thursday, 5-2, behind a three-goal third period, while the visiting Red Wings are 5-0-0 after besting the Columbus Blue Jackets Friday night by the same margin.

Both teams are playing inspired hockey, and are ranked among the NHL leaders in several statistical categories. The Red Wings lead the NHL in goals against with 1.4 while scoring a second-best 3.6 per game. Where they struggle is on the power play, ranking 15th in the league and only succeeding on one out of every six power play opportunities. By comparison, the Capitals give up 2.2 goals a game, but score a league-leading 3.7 goals per game and convert on 26 percent of their power plays, good for third in the league.

Both teams will look to keep their undefeated streak alive for as long as possible, so expect to see two motivated teams tonight. The puck will drop at the Verizon Center at 7 p.m. For more on the Capitals keep checking back with SB Nation D.C. and Japers' Rink.
Michal Neuvirth will likely not return Saturday against the Red Wings, but he could see game action next week, according to Bruce Boudreau.

BALLSTON, Va. - The Washington Capitals had a different look during practice Thursday at Kettler Capitals Iceplex. Special teams were the primary focus as players were broken up into several groups. Alex Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom, Troy Brouwer, Mike Green and Dennis Wideman made up one power play group, while Alexander Semin, Mike Knuble, Mathieu Perreault, Marcus Johansson, Brooks Laich, Roman Hamrlik and John Carlson made up another.

Minus Jay Beagle, who has yet to return after his fight with the Pittsburgh Penguins' Arron Asham last Thursday, every other Cap was present and accounted for, including Michal Neuvirth. Neuvirth participated in the entire practice and said afterwards that he continues to get better.

"I feel good," Neuvirth said. "Hopefully, tomorrow is going to feel even better, but it's getting better everyday."

Neuvirth said that he is unsure of whether or not he would be able to back up Tomas Vokoun Saturday against the Detroit Red Wings. Head coach Bruce Boudreau said that that was doubtful, but said that there is a possibility that Neuvirth could return during next week's road trip to Edmonton and Vancouver.

"I gotta believe that he'll be ready to play in a game next week on the trip," Boudreau said.

Neuvirth has not played since the season opener against the Carolina Hurricanes October 8. Dany Sabourin, who has backed up Vokoun during the last two games, is still with the Caps and practiced Friday.
