The Washington Capitals seven-game winning streak to start the season came to an end Thursday in a 2-1 loss to the Edmonton Oilers.

Karl Alzner gave Washington an early 1-0 lead in the first period, but Taylor Hall's power play goal late in the period tied the game at 1-1. In the second period, the Caps committed five minor penalties, one of which led to Jordan Eberle's game-winning goal off a Corey Potter rebound. The Oilers finished 2-of-8 on the power play.

After a less-than-stellar second period, the Caps came out firing in the third. The Oilers committed all three penalties in the final frame, including Andy Sutton's roughing call with 1:06 left that gave the Caps a 6-on-4 with Tomas Vokoun (17 saves) pulled. Despite a two-man advantage, Washington failed to muster any quality scoring chances and as the clock ran out, so did the Caps' winning streak.

The Caps return to action Saturday against the Vancouver Canucks at Rogers Arena.

The Washington Capitals were incredibly undisciplined in the second period as they committed five minor penalties. Luckily for the Caps, the Oilers only struck once as Edmonton leads Washington 2-1 after two periods.

With Troy Brouwer in the penalty box for hooking, Jordan Eberle gave the Oilers the lead at 12:44. Tomas Vokoun made the initial save on Corey Potter's slap shot, but the rebound came right to Eberle, who had a wide open net to score his second goal of the season.

The Oilers are 2-of-8 on the power play, making it just the second time this season that the Caps have allowed more than one power play goal in a game. It's also the most power play opportunities that Washington has allowed since November 20, 2010 against the Philadelphia Flyers (nine).

Shots were 8-7 in favor of Edmonton in the second period, but are 16-13 in favor of Washington for the game.

Without Mike Green in the lineup, the Washington Capitals entered Thursday's game with the Edmonton Oilers needing extra production from their blueline. Karl Alzner was happy to oblige.

Alzner's first goal of the season put the Caps up early, but Taylor Hall's power play goal late in the first period has the game tied at 1-1 after 20 minutes.

Alzner became the 14th different Cap to score this season at 5:36. After sustained pressure in the offensive zone, Jason Chimera picked up the rebound of Sean Collins' shot and sent a cross-ice pass to the point. Alzner found himself wide open and his slap shot beat Nikolai Khabibulin high glove side. Alzner's first goal of the season broke a personal 55-game scoreless drought.

Hall tied the game at 18:15 while Edmonton enjoyed a 4-on-3 power play thanks to a slew of Washington penalties. Corey Potter's slap pass to Jordan Eberle started a tic-tac-toe passing sequence that ended with Hall alone in the crease with a wide open net. Hall beat a sprawling Tomas Vokoun for his third goal of the season.

Shots are 9-5 in favor of Washington.

Via Mike Vogel, Washington Capitals defenseman Mike Green will likely miss Thursday's game against the Edmonton Oilers as he continues to recover from a twisted right ankle.

Green missed Thursday's morning skate, according to The Washington Post's Katie Carrera. It is the fourth consecutive day of practice that Green has missed; he hasn't skated since Saturday's 7-1 win over the Detroit Red Wings, a game where he scored two goals and finished with four points.

Green hurt his ankle after taking a puck to the face during the first period Saturday. While the puck only left Green with stitches, he twisted his ankle as he fell to the ice as a result of the errant puck.

Recent call-up Sean Collins will replace Green in the lineup Thursday. Coincidentally, the last time Collins played for the Caps in May, he also replaced an injured Green.

The Washington Capitals have opened the season with a franchise-best 7-0-0 record, but only two of those games were on the road. Thursday, after four days off, Washington will look for its third road win of the season and eighth overall against the Edmonton Oilers.

The Caps haven't played since Saturday, when they trounced the Detroit Red Wings in a 7-1 victory. Mike Green, who had four points (two goals, two assists) in that game, hasn't practiced since then, either. Green has missed practice Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday with a twisted right ankle. Head coach Bruce Boudreau said Green's status "doesn't look good for tomorrow." Sean Collins will start in Green's absence.

Tomas Vokoun will start his seventh consecutive game for the Caps. He is 6-0-0 with a 1.80 GAA and .944 SV% this season.

Thursday will be Washington's first game at Rexall Place since December 2009; Alex Ovechkin scored twice to lead the Caps to a 4-2 victory. The Oilers are 4-2-2 after Tuesday's 3-2 victory over the Caps' opponent Saturday, the Vancouver Canucks. Rookie Ryan Nugent-Hopkins leads the Oilers with five goals and eight points.

Mike Green will travel with the Caps on their two-game road trip to Western Canada, which begins Thursday in Edmonton. Michal Neuvirth will also travel with the team and could start Thursday.

BALLSTON, Va. - Before heading out on their first multi-game road trip of the season, the Washington Capitals practiced Tuesday at Kettler Capitals Iceplex. All players participated with the exceptions of Jay Beagle and Mike Green. Beagle has yet to return to practice since his fight with the Pittsburgh Penguins' Arron Asham October 13, while Green missed practice Monday as well with a twisted right ankle suffered during Saturday's 7-1 win over the Detroit Red Wings.

Beagle - along with John Erskine - will not make the trip to Western Canada this week, but Green and call-up Sean Collins will travel with the Caps to Edmonton and Vancouver.

"He's going on the trip," head coach Bruce Boudreau said in regards to Green. "We're hoping he can skate tomorrow."

Meanwhile, it can be inferred based on Boudreau's comments after practice that Michal Neuvirth could start Thursday against the Oilers. Neuvirth, who hasn't played since October 8, has fully participated in the last few practices and seems ready to return after suffering a bruised right foot October 10. When asked about how Tomas Vokoun's recent string of success will play into Neuvirth's return, Boudreau opened up.

"I told him that he's probably starting Thursday, just take what you need tomorrow," Boudreau said. "He's got to work hard like everybody else the first two days and whatever he needs tomorrow to get ready for Thursday, get ready."

Though it seemed that Boudreau was referring to Neuvirth, when asked to clarify, he was coy.

"[I] told one of them," he said.
