Despite playing California closer in the second half than in the first, the George Washington Colonials will fall to 1-1 on the season with an 81-54 loss to the No. 24 Golden Bears, who ran away with the game at home. Despite staying close early on, the Colonials dug too deep of a hole to climb out of in the first half, trailing by 20 at the buzzer.

The incredible shooting of the Golden Bears was the difference in this one, as they shot 56 percent from the field, 67 percent from 3-point range and 74 percent from the free throw line. By comparison, the Colonials shot just 38 percent from both the field and the foul line, though a more than respectable 43 percent from 3-point range.

It was that reliance from 3-point range that cost the Colonials the most, as they only made 15 field goals from elsewhere. Although that was one of the main issues, the Colonials were beaten soundly in every aspect of the game, though they did commit two fewer turnovers than Cal. With the win the Golden Bears move to 2-0.

The George Washington Colonials were unable to sustain their early momentum generated by playing No. 24 California close in the opening minutes the first half, falling behind 39-19 as the halftime buzzer sounded.

The Golden Bears hold the advantage in every statistical category at the half, except for blocks, which George Washington leads one to zero. The Bears have shot 58 percent from the field, 67 percent from 3-point range and 88 percent from the foul line.

The Colonials shot a paltry 30 percent from the field and missed their only two free throws, though they shot a great 43 percent from 3-point range. To make up the ground the Colonials will have to rebound the ball better in the second half, as they are being out-rebounded by a margin of nearly two-to-one. They also have to share the ball better as they have assisted on only five shots. Tony Taylor leads George Washington in points, with six, at the break.

George Washington travels cross-country for a tough game against No. 24 Cal in Berkeley.

Fresh off an easy win over Maryland-Eastern Shore on Friday, George Washington will face a much stiffer test when they face No. 24 California on the road on Sunday night in the first of four games in the Progressive CBE Classic. The game will begin at 9:30 p.m. EST and will be broadcasted on ESPNU.

George Washington had little trouble against overmatched UMES, but Cal will offer a much stiffer test. Led by first-team all Pac-10 guard Jorge Gutierrez, the Golden Bears return nine players from last year's squad, which finished fourth in the conference. The Golden Bears won their season opener on Friday, defeating UC-Irvine, 77-56. Mike Montgomery's squad will also be playing in its home city, making the task even tougher for Mike Lonergan and company.

For George Washington to win, it will need big performances guard Tony Taylor, who scored 20 points against UMES.
