The Washington Redskins' loss to the Dallas Cowboys stings, but the fact that the game was competitive shows the rebuilding project is underway. And hey, how about those college quarterbacks on Saturday night?

Oh sure, the Washington Redskins players are upset now. That's always how it is when you suffer the kind of loss to a bitter rival the Redskins did on Sunday when they fell, 27-24, to the Dallas Cowboys. The faces and words were from a group of players who are tired of losing, fought their hearts out and came so close to tasting victory, only to end up having the game decided by a few feet on two kicks.

All of that is understandable for the players. For fans and others in the organization, though, Sunday was a good day. The pain of the loss may linger, but soon, the silver lining will be seen by all. Maybe it'll happen on Wednesday, as quarterback Rex Grossman suggested. Maybe it won't truly be seen until next spring. At the end of the day, though, something tells me those silver linings will eventually be realized by all.

First: the big picture. The Redskins played a competitive game against a very good team while using several players that will factor into their future. They did all of this without sacrificing position in the 2012 NFL Draft; in fact, thanks to a wins by the Miami Dolphins and Philadelphia Eagles, the Redskins actually improved their position. All this came one night after Baylor's Robert Griffin III and USC's Matt Barkley put on shows in huge wins over top-10 teams. That potential franchise quarterback in the 2012 Draft seems closer than ever.

Digging deeper, there were some very promising performances by key youngsters in the loss. Linebacker Perry Riley, finally receiving an opportunity to play, made some big plays in the run game and generally played well. Yes, he was beat on the go-ahead touchdown by Jason Witten. Yes, he'll learn. Rookie safety DeJon Gomes also got the start and had his moments, especially in the run game. Rookie running back Roy Helu continues to impress when he receives the time. The patchwork offensive line, featuring a practice-squad left guard, did its job protecting Grossman. These are elements that helped make this game competitive.

In general, the Redskins' 2011 draft class has shown plenty of promise. There's very little to say about Ryan Kerrigan's brilliance that hasn't been said already, but Sunday's performance cemented the reality that he's already the best player on the defense, outside of maybe London Fletcher. Helu, the fourth-round pick, is already the best running back on the roster. Jarvis Jenkins and Leonard Hankerson, the second- and third-round picks, showed brief flashes of brilliance before suffering season-ending injuries. Fifth-round pick Niles Paul, now injured, is already the team's second-best special teams player. Seventh-round pick Chris Neild had another sack on Sunday. Gomes, a fifth-round pick, is good insurance in case LaRon Landry's contract demands are too high. Seventh-round pick Maurice Hurt has already filled in along the offensive line. That's eight of 11 players who contributed this year.

And then there's next year. Maybe the Redskins are out of the Andrew Luck sweepstakes, but as Saturday proved, Griffin and Barkley are more than just consolation prizes. The 2012 quarterback class looks like it will be far better than the 2011 class, one that Mike Shanahan ignored. As the losses kept piling up this season, that decision has come back to haunt Shanahan. But after what those two quarterbacks did what they did on Saturday night, you can see the logic in Shanahan's decision to kick the can down the curb with the quarterback and try to address other parts of the roster. There's a lot of pressure on Shanahan to find his quarterback in next year's draft, but there certainly are options. (And yes, for many, many reasons, I prefer Griffin to Barkley. But that's a subject for another time).

All these are baby steps, of course. Celebrating baby steps is the sign of being a fan of a losing team, and therefore this is all easy to mock by those high-horse fans of winning squads. But let's face it: this has been a losing franchise over the last two decades. We're used to giant steps backwards. If baby steps forward are made, I'm damn sure I'm going to note them.

Eventually, those baby steps need to become bigger, but that is not a discussion for today. As 106.7 The Fan radio host Danny Rouhier tweeted:

With the two games in the NFC East Sunday, the division race is much more interesting. Get up to date on the standings and the tie-breakers to this point in this post.

It's Week 11 in the NFL and the NFC East is still anyone's game. After a 27-24 overtime win over the Washington Redskins and a 17-14 New York Giants loss to the Philadelphia Eagles Sunday night, the Dallas Cowboys are now tied for the division lead.

The Giants were previously 6-3 and a game up on the Cowboys in the standings on Sunday, but were unable to beat the weakened Eagles and fell short of an opportunity to extend their division lead. The Cowboys and the Giants still haven't played yet this season, so there is plenty of opportunity for shifting atop the division and nothing has been settled yet.

The Redskins are now bringing up the tail of the division at 3-7 after their loss to the Cowboys. They stand one game behind the 4-6 Eagles in the win column, though the Eagles hold a 1-0 tie-breaker at this point. Philadelphia has beaten both Dallas and Washington once and split with the Giants. The Giants lost to the Redskins once and split with the Eagles. The Cowboys swept the Redskins by five total points and lost to the Eagles in their one contest.

The Washington Redskins made plenty of plays, but couldn't come up with one more big one to beat the Dallas Cowboys. After the game, the frustration was easily visible in the Redskins' locker room.

LANDOVER - Sitting in the fold up chair right in front of his locker, Washington Redskins cornerback DeAngelo Hall, still beside himself after his team lost 27-24 against the Dallas Cowboys, took his time getting dressed. He knew a throng of reporters stood waiting right behind him, and that he'd attempt to explain how he turned in what he considers to be his most disappointing effort of the season.

When Hall finally stood up to faced them, he delivered a self-loathing tirade that epitomized his frustration.

"The way I'm playing right now," the corner seethed, "[the Redskins] need to cut me."

In a game that was as closely contested as it was, Hall knew that his team was just one big play away from a victory, one that would end the team's losing streak. He had his chance to deliver in overtime, when Tony Romo scrambled and spotted an open Dez Bryant on third-and-15. Hall was matched up with Bryant, but slipped on the play, creating the opening for Bryant to make the catch for a 24-yard gain. The completion put the ball in range for the game-winning field goal.

"When you pay a guy the kind of money I'm making, you expect [me] to make that play," he said.

What was worse for Hall is that this is a feeling he knew all too well. He'd been beaten earlier in the season by Bryant on a third-and-21 catch that would eventually lead to the go-ahead field goal.

"I'm the reason we lost the game. It's frustrating. It's tough to swallow. Second time in a row to Dallas [and Bryant], so definitely a little pissed off at myself," he said.

Hall was correct to think the Redskins were one big play away from winning the game. They were. And though he ultimately gave up the game's decisive play, there were others in the Redskins locker room who felt they were had their chance to seal the win.

On the opposite side of the locker room, a dejected Graham Gano had to face the music after he too missed his chance. Earlier in overtime, he lined up to attempt a potential 52-yard game-winning field goal. The kick had the distance, but sailed wide right, denying the Redskins of ending their five-game skid and giving the Cowboys an excellent chance to stretch it to six.

"I just missed it," he explained frankly. "No excuses, just missed it."

"It's very frustrating. I don't feel any pressure out there whatsoever. I love those opportunities [to win the game] and to not pull through is very disappointing."

It was just that kind of day for these Redskins, now losers of six in a row. Just when they showed signs of life in each phase of the game, they still couldn't make that one last play.

Rookie Ryan Kerrigan was another Redskin player lamenting his opportunity to change the game. Early in the fourth quarter, Washington's top 2011 draft pick dropped back in his zone with plenty of time to read and react to a Romo pass. He leaped up and extended his arms, trying to haul in what would have been a momentum-shifting interception. Instead, the ball was deflected off his finger tips and landed into the arms of Cowboys tight end Martellus Bennett for a first down. Three plays later, Romo found Jason Witten for a go-ahead 59-yard touchdown.

"That [play] was a heartbreaker for me," Kerrigan said. "Nine times out of ten I bet I make that catch, and then the one time I actually got the chance, I didn't make it. I should have made the play."

Of all the losses the Redskins have suffered this season, this may have been the most frustrating. Not only because of how close the game was, but because they lost despite getting season-best performances from the two units that rarely came to play over the last month and a half. The offense was resurrected, scoring a season-high 24 points. Brandon Banks had his most impactful day of the season, sparking the offense with returns of 32 and 55 yards.

And yet, on a day where the team did make plenty of plays, it's the fact that they couldn't deliver just one more that'll keep Washington's search for their fourth victory of 2011 going until after Thanksgiving.

"It's one thing to fight, but it's another thing to fight and win," said defensive captain London Fletcher. "I feel like eventually, because of the character, it's going to happen for us and we're going to make more plays. We're going to make more plays to win these games."

I really hope that Washington Redskins wide receiver Jabar Gaffney was hacked on Twitter. Because otherwise ... this is really not a good look.

Gaffney was understandably frustrated after the Redskins fell, 27-24, to the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday. Like many Redskins players, he had several Cowboys fans talk trash to him on Twitter after the game. Most players let it go. Gaffney did the complete opposite of that.

Warning, folks: this isn't pretty.

We know for sure that Gaffney's account is actually him, because it was the subject of a post on the official team blog earlier this week. Therefore, the only real way Gaffney gets off the hook is if he was hacked. Otherwise? I'm guessing Gaffney's Twitter tenure will be a short one.

LANDOVER, Md. - Barry Cofield aptly described the feeling in the Washington Redskins locker room following their 27-24 overtime loss to the Dallas Cowboys, one that stretched his team's losing streak to six.

"This [loss] hurts a lot more," the defensive tackle said. "You lose in overtime, you lose to a hated rival, [so] it hurts more."

Indeed, the Redskins fought hard, but were still bested by their bitter rivals in the game's final moments.

"I thought we played extremely hard," head coach Mike Shanahan said. "I thought we kept our poise and I was just disappointed we didn't get the job done."

Coming into the game, the Redskins offense could only be described as non-existent. From breakdowns to penalties to turnovers, they were unable to points on the scoreboard and put immense pressure on their defense.

In the first quarter, the Redskins offensive ineptitude reared its ugly head yet again as a fumble by tight end Fred Davis was recovered by the Cowboys inside Washington territory. Dallas made the Redskins pay for the early mistake when Tony Romo hit Dez Bryant on a 22-yard pass for a score, giving the Cowboys an early 7-0 lead. It was looking like déjà vu all over again as the seven point deficit seems like a mountainous climb for one of the league's worst offenses.

But the Redskins found a way to answer.

After a shanked Dallas punt that put the ball inside Cowboys territory, the Redskins were finally able to cross the goal line. They did so thanks in part to an unorthodox playcall by Kyle Shanahan, who had Grossman run a designed quarterback draw up the middle to end Washington's scoring drought, cutting the Dallas lead to 10-7.

And as rare a feat as it sounds, Washington wasn't done there. They scored another first half touchdown when Grossman hit Jabar Gaffney to give the Redskins a 14-10 lead going into halftime. It was their first lead they have had on an opponent since their October 2 win over the St. Louis Rams.

"We didn't panic," Shanahan said of his team rebounding from the early deficit.

"Sometimes football can have a lot of momentum to it," Grossman said. "I don't know why. One good play kind of leads itself to another one. We got on a roll."

But after a third quarter whose only score was a Graham Gano 40-yard field goal, momentum shifted in the other direction.

In the fourth quarter, after a missed 49-yard field goal attempt by Gano, Dallas was able to counter with a 14-play, 61-yard scoring drive that ended with a Laurent Robinson touchdown grab courtesy of Romo, tying the game at 17.

Dallas wasn't done, delivering what looked to be a dagger as Tony Romo was able to elude pressure and find a wide open Jason Witten, who then streaked down the left sideline and into the endzone for a 59 yard score, giving the Cowboys a 24-17.

"That's Romo," said a dejected Brian Orakpo. "He's like a snake. You got to know where your rushing. He's slippery, he's all over the place."

In the game's waning moments, the Redskins offense was able to respond by driving 89 yards on 12 plays in just over five minutes a series that concluded with an impressive toe-tap touchdown by Donte Stallworth to send the game to overtime.

"It's kind of a situation where I could throw [the ball] to anybody," Grossman said of the play. "I liked the leverage that Donte had and I tried to put it in the back of the end zone where only he could get it. He made a great catch."

It'd be the last play that the Redskins faithful could cheer about in this game.

Washington had a chance to end the game on their first drive of overtime, but it wasn't to be as a 52-yard attempt by Gano sailed wide right, giving the Cowboys good field to set up a winning kick of their own.

And they did just that when Dan Bailey barely snuck it inside the right upright from 39 yards out to end the game. Though the Redskins had played one of their better games, it wasn't enough.

"It stings more because as a player you understand how much our owner wants to win this game," Grossman said. "We understand how much fans want to win this game."

"We tried our [butts] off and I'm proud of every single player and every teammate. [We] just came up a little short."

For the second time this season, DeAngelo Hall was beat in a key play that led to a Dallas Cowboys' win over the Washington Redskins.
After the game, Hall was livid at himself. Here's a transcript of his interview with reporters, via Rich Campbell of the Washington Times.

"I feel like I had a good game up until that point, but when you’re paying a guy the kind of money I’m making, you expect him to make that play. Two times in a row – I would cut myself if I was in the front office."

Later, Hall said if he were in charge, he would be the first one to "run myself out."

Redskins' tight end Fred Davis had another productive day against Dallas. By the standards he has set this season, however, it was not one of his best games from a fantasy perspective. Davis finished the game with six catches for 49 yards, which included a 24 yard completion from Rex Grossman. He was targeted seven times by Grossman but was held scoreless on the afternoon.

The lowlight for Davis came in the first quarter when he fumbled a ball that was recovered by the Cowboys' Gerald Sensabaugh. The lost fumble would immediately lead to the Cowboys first touchdown of the day and the 7-0 lead. As we've noted already, Davis took exception with the ruling and the fans' criticism of the fumble by posting his thoughts on his twitter account. The six catch, 49 yard performance combined with the overtime loss had Davis feeling a little surly.
