The Washington Redskins have shown lots of improvement the past two weeks. If that continues, we could be looking at the early stages of a 2012 playoff run.

The Washington Redskins looked like a real professional football team in their 23-17 win over the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday afternoon, catching many of us by surprise. The team that showed up in Seattle was somehow different from the Redskins team that had lost its previous six games. They were clearly motivated, and I don't think the motivation was due only to the pushing and shoving that preceded the opening coin toss.

They were motivated because they were playing for their jobs. And because these players, unlike many of their fans, still want to win as many games as possible. They played on Sunday like they had something to prove, and perhaps they were right. Perhaps they proved it.

We're not going to get ahead of ourselves though. Beating a four-win team is certainly not a predictor of any future results, especially not when the Redskins have upcoming games against the New York Jets, New England Patriots, and New York Giants. Those are three potential playoff teams. And the Redskins are not a playoff team. At least not this year.

What we saw from the Redskins on Sunday though was a hint that that may be changing soon. These Washington Redskins might be a playoff team before you know it.

Mike Shanahan's record as head coach of the Redskins might be far closer to disappointing than impressive, but the team has shown significant improvements at times, in several different areas. The defense has gone from being ranked 31st overall a year ago to 11th now. They're giving up only 20.2 points per game, and as the team completes its shift from a 4-3 to a 3-4, they're only going to get better. The Redskins have successfully introduced Barry Cofield and Stephen Bowen

Jenkins may not have played a single down this season due to his preseason injury, but his selection in the 2011 NFL Draft is already seen as nearly a success. Getting Jenkins back in training camp next season will be like having an extra second round pick.

But Jenkins isn't the only rookie who will be a big part of Shanahan's plans going forward. Ryan Kerrigan leads the team with four forced fumbles, and is tied with Brian Orakpo for the team lead in sacks with six. Oh yeah, and of course an interception for a touchdown. Kerrigan is going to be a star. And so too maybe is Roy Helu, who has looked to be by far Washington's best running back of the three that have earned starts at one point this season. Helu will be the unquestioned starter for the near future, a position that he's rightfully earned.

By this time next year, the Redskins will be in playoff contention. Led by Helu and whoever Shanahan decides to draft to fill the quarterback position in 2012, the offense will continue improving in addition to the defense. By this time next year, they could be closer to the league's elite than the league's worst.

By this time next year, that six-game losing streak will seem like a distant memory; something we can all look back at and laugh.

And the division just might be swinging in the Redskins' favor. By this time next year, the Philadelphia Eagles and their head coach Judd Harbaugh (Jim and Jeff's lesser-known cousin) will be the ones scouting out potential first round quarterbacks in the following year's draft as their $100 Million experiment known as Michael Vick continues to look like a failure.

Football has no guarantees, obviously. Plenty could go wrong for the Redskins in the next 12 months. But it's important to note that we could be staring at the light and the end of the tunnel for this team. If the improvements continue, we could be seeing the very very earliest early stages of a 2012 playoff run.

Washington Redskins fullback Darrel Young suffered a concussion in the Redskins' win over the Seahawks on Sunday, according to Mike Shanahan.

Washington Redskins fullback Darrel Young suffered a concussion in the team's 23-17 win over the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday, coach Mike Shanahan confirmed in his press conference on Monday. The Redskins' fullback was knocked out during the first half and did not return to the game. Most suspected a concussion, and now, that has been confirmed.

Young had taken over the job this season for the first time over incumbent Mike Sellers. If Young misses any time, Sellers will likely return to his role as fullback after making the team as a fourth tight end out of training camp. The 36-year old Sellers has been with the team for good since 2004.

In addition, Shanahan said that defensive end Stephen Bowen suffered a third-degree PCL tear in Sunday's loss, but added that he hopes Bowen will be able to play in next week's game against the New York Jets at FedEx Field.

Roy Helu's strong performance for the Redskins in their 23-17 win over the Seahawks proves he should be the unconditional starter at running back for the rest of the season.

When the story of the 2011 Washington Redskins will be told, there will undoubtedly be a reference or two to the six-game losing streak that not only crushed the team's playoff hopes, but altered their fanbase's mindset. The Redskins faithful went from daring to believe the team had a shot at a playoff berth at 3-1 to almost hoping the team would lose their remaining games to gain an edge in the 2012 NFL Draft. That said, they still want to see signs of progress along the way, and have been clamoring for younger players on the roster give them a glimpse of what they hope is a bright future.

Enter rookie running back Roy Helu. The fourth rounder out of Nebraska provided a spark to the Redskins offense that helped propel them to a much needed 23-17 win over the Seattle Seahawks, one that finally ended Washington's six-game losing skid.

Mike Shanahan's curious use of his running backs in recent weeks have left some wondering if the team even had an every-down back on its roster. Giving backs like Ryan Torain and Tashard Choice carries in the last few games gave the impression that Shanahan didn't believe Helu was ready to carry the load. But that's not the case anymore, apparently.

"I thought he was ready," the head coach told reporters after the game. "I thought he was ready to play a full game."

Helu proved he was ready, notching 30 touches (23 rushing, seven receiving) and accounting for 162 yards of total offense. The rookie displayed many of the qualities that led Shanahan to want to draft him in the first place, showing his quickness, decisiveness and, most of all, his ability to make people miss.

That was never more evident than the most eye-popping play of the day. The Nebraska product took a toss from Rex Grossman on third-and-three, cut to his left and hurdled a Seahawks defender while maintaining his balance. Once he landed, he kept the run alive as he was able to shed the tackle of a charging Kam Chancellor en route to a 28-yard touchdown run, the first of his young career. It was the type of run that had been sorely lacking from the Redskins offense, a unit that desperately needed the big play in the ground game all year long.

Now that he's shown what he can do when given the bulk of the carries, the running back carousel should be over. Helu should be given the same opportunity that second year linebacker Perry Riley has been given on defense. He should be allowed to take over for a struggling veteran and try to make a strong case to be the guy at that spot in 2012.

That's what the rest of this season is about anyway, isn't it? Evaluating the younger players to see who can become key contributors for the 2012 season and beyond. Helu looks to fit that bill, and there's no reason to think an other back should be taking significant carries away from him during the final five game stretch this season.

The key for Helu going forward is whether or not he can have performances like this on a consistent basis. He showed great toughness against a solid Seattle front, but in the next few weeks he'll be going up against the likes of the New York Jets, Giants and Minnesota Vikings, all of whom are in the top half of the league in rush defense. Helu can prove just how big of a piece he is to the Redskins rushing puzzle if he can finish the year strong.

That evaluation, of course, becomes much harder if he isn't named the starter for the rest of the season.

The Washington Redskins' 23-17 win over the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday featured a pregame scuffle and a lot of trash-talking, which shocked most observers because the two teams aren't exactly rivals and aren't fighting for a playoff berth. Afterwards, Washington Redskins players tried to explain what caused the animosity.

Tight end Fred Davis probably had the best quote of all:

"What really made us mad was that those guys thought like they were Super Bowl Champions or something," Davis told CSN Washington's Kelli Johnson. "They were talking to us like we were worse than them, and we have almost the same record."

That doesn't answer exactly what happened, though. According to Redskins players, via Rick Maese of the Washington Post, the Seahawks objected to the Redskins huddling over their logo on midfield. The Redskins famously did this earlier in the season in a road game against the Dallas Cowboys, but for some reason, the Seahawks were especially pissed off. Hall claimed that the Seahawks players intentionally stomped on his head during the game, which I'm sure the Seahawks players will contest.

Regardless, that explains how a game between two mediocre teams turned chippy. Apparently, it extended to the fans too:

Washington Redskins tight end Fred Davis had a bounce-back performance against the Seattle Seahawks after posting several poor fantasy football efforts over the past couple weeks. Davis ended up catching four passes for 58 yards and a touchdown, which was good for just under 12 fantasy points in most league formats.

Most of Davis' production came on the Redskins' first drive, which also featured his touchdown and wacky dance. As far as catches and targets, Davis didn't get a ton more than he did in previous weeks. The major difference was the touchdown, which came when he broke away from a Seahawks defender and had an easy catch for the score.

Rex Grossman probably wasn't in the lineup for many fantasy football teams, but those owners who started him were rewarded with a very strong performance, all things considering. Grossman ended up putting up strong fantasy stats, throwing for 314 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions in the Redskins' 23-17 victory over the Seattle Seahawks.

In standard leagues, that is anywhere between 16 and 20 points, depending on how many yards one gets for a passing touchdown. Few expected Grossman to pick up those kinds of numbers, but with the return of wide receiver Santana Moss and the re-emergence of tight end Fred Davis, Grossman was able to prove he can help your fantasy team if you have a starter on a bye.

For many, the Washington Redskins' 23-17 win over the Seattle Seahawks was actually a negative. The win hurt the Redskins' 2012 NFL Draft position, and for many fans, that is all that matters. Instead of being in a tie for the fourth-worst record with the Miami Dolphins, Jacksonville Jaguars and Carolina Panthers at 3-8, the Redskins are in a seven- and potentially eight-way tie for the seventh-worst record with the following teams:

Kansas City Chiefs (if they lose to Pittsburgh on Sunday night)

Of course, there's also another way to look at the NFL standings, as NFL Network reminds us.

Washington Redskins rookie running back Roy Helu established a career high on Sunday afternoon against the Seattle Seahawks. Helu started this month by breaking Art Monk's single game receptions record, and he ended the month by rushing for 108 yards on 23 carries. It marked the first time in his young career he broke the century mark. One of those carries was a dynamic 28 yard touchdown run that featured Helu hurdling an oncoming Seattle tackler - a run that will likely be his highlight of the year

In addition to the 108 yards on the ground, Helu also had seven catches for 54 yards in the air. He was targeted by Rex Grossman seven times and converted each time the ball was thrown his way. Fantasy owners have to be pleased with Helu's career day on the ground and productive day catching the ball out of the backfield.
